I have an inside cat, as alot of you know (thanks for voting for him) and for some reason this year we seem to be having a problem with fleas. He is almost 8 years old and declwed and strictly an inside cat and we have never had a problem before. I have tried everything from borax and epsom salt to the foggers and so far nothing is working. Some one suggested a product called Fleabusters and I just wanted to know if anybody knew anything about it before I spent the money on it. Please help me, I am running out of options and Dale (kitty Meow Meow ) is not looking forward to being shaved LOL.Thanks

I don't know how expensive the fleabuster is but I think along time ago I read somewhere where you can open a beer and put it in a bowl and put it under a night light and the fleas will be drawn to it??? You might be able to find something about it online...if nothing else it should be cheap!

Fleabusters is pretty expensive. My vet claims it works, but only on carpets and possibly hardwoods. I have a lot of vinyl flooring (and a mob of cats), and Fleabusters isn't something you can leave where the cat(s) can get into it. With carpet, you work it down in so it goes under the carpet, and with hardwoods you work it into the cracks in between & at the edges. In both cases, you have to vacuum up any residue. It's toxic to cats if they can get at it - some kind of super borax, as I remember. I've also tried some non-toxic powder I found online (and can't remember the name of right now). It's mainly diatomaceous earth, which kills lots of insects by cutting the outer shell/coating/whatever on them. Won't hurt the cats, though. Have you used any of the spot treatments like Advantage or Frontline? I've had pretty good luck with those, and a couple of my cats are very allergic to fleas.

That is a good one, I needed that, I did try the beer last night. although I put the cat in the garage first. I didnt want him having a party without me. I imagined waking up and finding him sprawled out on the couch with a lamp shade on his head and a copy of playkitty in his paw. Not what i what to wake up to. Thanks for the advice though, caught a couple of fleas, maybe I am getting them under control finally.

I used to be a veterinary assistant, and I can tell you after trying a million different things: if you want to get rid of fleas with the least amount of cost and effort, and the least harm & stress to your cat, do this: Vacuum your house very thoroughly, top to bottom, and remove the bag immediately after. throw it away outside. Do this again in 2 days and then every week until the fleas are gone. Get Frontline Plus for your cat. ** Very Important ** Make sure to get the Plus, it kills them off in all aspects of their life cycle so it will eliminate the problem without you having to treat the house with anything else. The chemical it uses is very effective, and much less harmful to cats than the cheaper stuff, so it is well worth the price. I buy it from here: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=7160Right now they are offering free shipping on the Frontline Plus. You will need to reapply the Frontline Plus every 6 weeks for at least a few months. There are stickers inside the package that you can put on a calender for reminders. Get a flea comb and comb your cat routinely. I put a little bleach water in a cup and toss the hair off the comb into it to kill any fleas that it caught. Hope this helps!

We had a bad case of fleas, and we didn't even own a pet at the time. It was my crazy neighbors cats. The cats are wild, and always reproducing. Well they have real bad fleas. It got really bad, that they were biting my daughter around her tummy.
I tried the foggers, worked a little, but they kept coming in from outside. They would hitch a ride on our jeans, etc.
The magical thing that worked was something Called "sevendust" IT was this white powder, and you spread it around your house, It makes like a barrier, the fleas dont want to cross. Well that worked, they stopped coming in our house. Its been a year, No fleas. But I'm thinking I need to buy some more because its probably worn off by now.
Another thing is the LIght and water. Take a plate, bowl, whatever. Fill it up with water, Turn a big light on it. And watch those suckers drowned. LOL me and my daughter had a fun time watching that. It was funny how stupid fleas are. They would jump right into the water.

Go with Celtic's suggestion. You have to get them off the cat and keep the cat flea free to be successful. You may want to bomb the house if it is really bad. But, make sure kitty is treated first.
I avoid using poisons/bombs as much as possible around the animals. But, if it's really bad, you may want to do it. Just put Kitty outside, and clean up really good afterwards, especially make sure you mop all the floors!
Good luck. Fleas are a horrible nuisance.

One more thing, fleas are really easy to bring into the house, especially if you or someone else has been somewhere that there were fleas. They can come in on your clothes. Once they are there, it is a real PITA! Good luck.

Your best bet is to go with celticbikerbabe's advise. This method has always worked for me. It's very important to get the Frontline Plus for your cat. Please don't think you can save a few bucks by not buying it. Remember your cat is the host for the fleas. With the Frontline Plus when the fleas bite your cat the Frontline gets in the fleas system and kills them. Don't worry, Frontline Plus is perfectly safe for your cat but deadly to the fleas. Since your cat is an indoor cat he/she can and will get fleas if they lay in an open window sill. Fleas can get right through the window screen.

Frontline is really good. We live in the country and have never had a flea problem on the dogs or the cats. We brought home a kitten from the animal shelter several years ago and it was covered with fleas. we put a few drops on it ( he was very, very young) and put him in a box overnight, the next morning I had never seen so many dead fleas. I don't know how the flears hadn't killed him. As kids, my mothers home was really infested. It was horrible. I am highly allergic to their bites also. A few years ago I spent the night at her home when she was sick and ended up in the emergency room. But be cautious, like celticbikebabe stressed. Make absolutely sure that you DON'T USE THE DOG FORMULA by mistake. It can kill a cat. Make absolutely sure you use the frontline for cats. My sister, being the stingy thing that she is, thought she'd save money by using a couple of drops from the dog's frontline and almost killed that cat. uh, read the instructions. Didn't mean for this to be so long.

Thanks Ya'll got an appointment with the vet on tuesday, for his rabies shot and then for some fleas stuff. They also recommended Capstar, so I will try that too. I have been keeping him in the garage while treating the house, and for some reason, he thinks its a treat, he is a nutty little kitty and having a ball in the garage. He never ceases to amaze me , I go out to see him cause I think he is lonely and sad, and there he is looking all happy playing in the boxes. The fleas in the house are getting so much better. Thank you guys for all the great advice. I have the light bulb trick set up still and keep moving it from room to room and get less and less fleas each time and we are getting less on us too. Thanks again.

I have a dog(Sugar) and the best thing for fleas is Frontline, expensive but worth every penny.I also have what is called a Happy Jack(must have named it after me)and I got it at our local Southern States and it is a silver tray with a top that you take off and put on and has a nightlight bulb in it and on the bottom tray is a sticky pad and it stays on all the time and catches fleas, gnats and whatever is crawling around and I love it.I always keep extra sticky pads on hand. When I bathe Sugar I mix doggy shampoo with regular Dawn dishwashing liguid and believe me it works, don't ask me how it just works. Those are my tips on fleas.

Great! However, be careful not to apply more than one flea treatment on your cat at any one time without the vet's approval, or it can make them very sick. Actually, I would highly recommend to you that you do not get the Capstar. It is way more expensive and doesn't work anywhere near as well. And of course there is the joy of giving your cat a pill routinely. (capstar is a pill.) Honestly, all the clients I have had try it were not impressed at all. Also, the Flea treatments will be more expensive from your vet than buying them from either Drs Foster & Smith online (my link above), Petco, or Petsmart. The vet doesn't buy in the huge quantities that the big box stores do, so they get a more expensive wholesale price. Drs Foster & Smith have the best price I have found, especially when you factor in the free shipping. If you are keeping him in the garage, do a good sweep and make sure there isn't any antifreeze that he can get into, or rat/mouse, ant trap, or roach poison down. They will often play with the little containers those poisons are in, or chew on them and get very sick. Thanks Ya'll got an appointment with the vet on tuesday, for his rabies shot and then for some fleas stuff. They also recommended Capstar, so I will try that too. I run a no-kill shelter for kitty cats that cant go to regular homes for one reason of another, and some are very allergic to fleas, so we have to control them to the max. And I agree Frontline Plus is the best. You can find cheaper, but it will not work as well, there are other brands that claim to work as well, but they have not done the job for us. Lots of running the vacumm and really following a scheadule with the Front line plus. Have fun and good luck

Well, I took my kitty to the vets on tuesday to get his rabies shot and got him a dose of frontline plus, it seems to be doing good for him, he is already acting better. My only problem is, I called to make an appointment to get him his shot and they failed to inform me untill i drove all the way up there in my big ole gas guzzling truck (my only vehicle), that his last shot was a 3 year rabies shot and I didnt need to be there, ARG!!!! Oh well, at least he got his medicine. Thanks eveyone.

I found some stuff that works great at the grocery store don't know if you have an Ingles where you live but I'm sure other store should have it .Its called Household Insect Control-ready-to-use BONIDE PRODUCTS I dont even think it was more than $10 I only spray under things and places I knew my dog or people wouldn't make contact wall trims it works for a long time. There all so is a pill called Capstar it kills the fleas on a pet for around 4 days with in about 1 hour this helps cut down on alot of fleas about $5 you can get from the Vet to use with advantage or frontline $10 hope this helps good luck!
