A few months ago, I entered a Buckmasters.com contest. I don't hunt (except with a camera) but I think one of the prizes was an expensive pair of binoculars and I was hoping for that. I was careful (as I always am) to make sure that I was only entering a contest and not agreeing to buy anything.

Then I got a bill in the mail from Buckmasters saying I had joined some membership plan and owed $130.90. I figured it was just a mistake, so I called their toll-free number to let them know about the error. But they refused to take my word for it. They insisted that I had authorized the charge and refused to remove it. Afterward, I received several more bills, each one getting more insistent, until today's mail which threatens collection proceedings. At the same time, they began making collection calls to my cell phone. The first couple of times, I was polite and just told them I hadn't ordered anything, hadn't agreed to buy anything, and wanted them to remove the charge and stop calling. By the third call, I was no longer polite. By the fifth call, I was downright nasty. Now they are calling nearly every day (but since I set my cell to recognize their calls, I don't answer).

I have already filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau in Alabama (where they are located) -- and noted that there were already 343 complaints filed against them, 182 of which are about billing and collection issues. I also filed a complaint with the US Postal Inspector.

I know that Buckmasters runs contests regularly (they have a couple running right now) but I'll never enter another one of theirs.

Sorry to hear about your trouble!

Are these contests listed on SA? I was trying to see if I had entered any but couldn't find them.

Yes, the contest I entered had been listed on SA (the title was "Buckmasters.Com - 2008 Big Buck Sweepstakes"). I entered a long time ago and it was until just a couple of months ago that the fraudulent billings and harassing phone calls began. But I've done some more research on the web today and discovered a huge number of other complaints about Buckmasters, nearly all of which relate to the same behavior I reported.

My husband had a hell of a time with buckmasters.  He saw an ad on TV where you could get a complimentary magazine and continue with a subscription if you wanted one.  He never got the complimentary magazine but he did get numerous threatening phone calls to pay the $130.00 he agreed to.  These people got downright nasty, cursing, screaming etc.  We called the BBB, they have numerous complaints on file.  We also located the phone number for buckmasters headquarters and spoke to someone higher up on the food chain.  He explained that they were under some kind of contract with this subscription company and were doing their best to get our of it.

If others are having problems with Buckmasters (or any other Alabama company), here are the places to lodge your formal complaints:
-
Attorney General of Alabama: http://www.ago.state.al.us/consumer.cfm  -
US Postal Inspector: https://postalinspectors.uspis.gov/contactUs/filecomplaint.aspx  -
Better Business Bureau of Alabama: http://centralalabama.bbb.org/

I had the SAME problem with them, it has been months and I still, every once in a while, get a call from them.  My husband told them no, he wasn't interested in buying anything, and than they started calling and also sent a notice from a collection agency.  He sent a letter certified mail that he disputed the charges, and that piece stopped.  They are UNBELIEVABLE!

I entered one of their contests a long time ago and they would call every day trying to sell something, even after I told them VERY firmly never to call again several times. They still will call occasionally but I have my phone set to block their number. I would never enter another contest that Buckmasters has anything to do with, no matter how nice the prize.

Thanks so much. I will avoid now though I am not a hunter so I hope I didn't enter any of their contest. That's ridiculous. Let us know if you beat them. You could also turn them into the FTC. They take complaints. They generally won't reply back to you but they will contact and monitor the company. I had a problem with MCI calling me incessantly and after I turned them into the FTC, they never called me again.

I won a nice ceiling fan from buckmasters that I sold on Craigslist for $150. I never had any problems with them.

We haven't received a bill or anything but they call daily. They have been told not to call but it doesn't matter. Always trying to sell something. My husband is an avid hunter and I am not and they always call when he is at work and I have tried to deal with them but they are SOOOOOO persistent. It really bugs me that I now have a 800 number memorized! I thought I was the only one. Sorry for everyone else too!
