Question for SATURDAY 31JAN08: (#3) (SATURDAY! Hint...hint...hint! midnight to midnight .... ) (This one is pretty simple ... just ask David) In 1975, A friend of Loren’s was sent by the US government to SE Asia to design a sewer system and took Loren with him to our “mystery City” which had a ‘stinky’ problem.
In the span of over two hundred years, it has been the political, social and economic center for much of South East Asia and Indochina as well. Its influence in the arts, politics, fashion, education and entertainment as well as being a business, financial and cultural center of Asia has given it the status of a global city. It is the world's 22nd largest city by population with approximately 8,160,522 registered residents (July 2007), but due to large unregistered influxes of migrants from nations across Asia, the population is estimated at nearly 15 million people. This has in turn shifted the country from being a rather homogenous population to increasingly a more vibrant mix of Western, Indian and Chinese people. After the fall of Ayutthaya to the Burmese Kingdom in 1767, the newly declared King Taksin established a new capital, which became known as Thonburi. When Taksin's reign ended in 1782, King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke reconstructed the capital on the east bank of the Chao Phraya river and gave the city a ceremonial name which became shortened to its current official name: Krung Thep Maha Nakhon. The full ceremonial name of the city given by King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke, and later edited by King Mongkut, is: Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Yuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit.
Say what?
WHERE IS HE? REMEMBER NOT TO POST YOUR ANSWER HERE!!!!(Remember that you still have until midnight to answer the previous question! If you are having troubles ... don't worry ... each question contains several clues that you can use, in like a google search, which will lead you right to the correct answer!)

The answer to Friday's location (#2) is Cyprus! (a search for "third largest Mediterranean island " would have given you the correct answer) Everyone got this right! The US Marines came busting into our College dorm, threw us on trucks which took us to ships waiting at the docks. So off to Cyprus we went courtesy of the US government! It's a nice Island but a little too rocky for my taste. For some reason, once they got us there, they couldn't seem to figure out what to do with us. It was almost 3 weeks before I got my free plane ride back to the States. So, being stuck on an island with nothing to do I decided to try out some of the local hooch: Absinthe! If you have heard stories about Absinthe containing something that will dope you out ... its all true! So some of the time I spent there is just a blur --- but I had fun! Or I think I did ....
On another topic: I will start posting the next day's clues in the late evening since some people seem to be confused by the extra time being available. Maybe that will make it easier for everybody.

Question for SUNDAY 01FEB09: (#4) YEP...THAT IS THE DAY ALL YOU FOLK GO TO CHURCH! 3 hrs from now. (I've heard that David doesn't know ... so you will just have to goggle this one ) In 1976 Loren gets conned into going to Indonesia to teach English in our next “mystery City”.
It has a greater population than any other city in Southeast Asia. It has an area of 255.41 sq miles and a population of 8,489,910. Currently it is the twelfth largest city in the world. Its metropolitan area, Jabodetabek, contains more than 23 million people. The old name of the city was Sunda Kelapa. The earliest record mentioning this area as a capital city can be traced to the Indianized kingdom of Tarumanagara as early as the fourth century. In AD 39, King Purnawarman established Sunda Pura as a new capital city for the kingdom, located at the northern coast. The harbor area was renamed Sunda Kelapa as written in a Hindu monk's lontar manuscripts, which are now located at the Bodleian Library of Oxford University in England, and travel records by Prince Bujangga Manik. By the 14th century, Sunda Kelapa became a major trading port for the kingdom. The first European fleet, four Portuguese ships from Malacca, arrived in 1513 when the Portuguese were looking for a route for spices, especially black pepper. In 1619 the Dutch renamed the city "Batavia". Within Batavia's walls, wealthy Dutch built tall houses and pestilential canals. Commercial opportunities attracted Indonesian and especially Chinese immigrants, the increasing numbers creating burdens on the city. Tensions grew as the colonial government tried to restrict Chinese migration through deportations. On 9 October 1740, 5,000 Chinese were massacred and the following year, Chinese inhabitants were moved to Glodok outside the city walls. The Koningsplein, now Merdeka Square, was completed in 1818, and Kebayoran Baru was the last Dutch-built residential area. The Japanese again renamed the city during their World War II occupation of Indonesia.

The answer to Saturday's location (#3) is Bangkok! (a search for "Krung Thep Maha Nakhon" would have given you the correct answer) Everyone got this right, once again! Did I make these clues toooo easy??? Don't worry ... they WILL get tougher!!!! The "friend" was actually the father of my girlfriend. Wanna come with? Hmmmm a free trip, with the girlfriend, duh! I didn't get to see much of the surrounding area, but seeing Bangkok was an experience in itself! You've probably have heard of people refer to various places as " Sin City? Well, there is only one TRUE "Sin City" in the world and that is, without a doubt, Bangkok in 1975!!! Anything you could possibly wish for was for sale ... and cheap! After the war ended in Vietnam I am sure that every hooker in Vietnam jumped in their 1955 Ford and beat feet for Thailand! I had thought that I was pretty 'street-wise' until then ... but I found myself wandering around most of the time with my eyes as wide as dinner plates!

Question for MONDAY 02FEB09: (#5) YEP...THAT IS THE DAY YOU SEND THE OLD MAN OFF TO WORK AGAIN. 3 hrs from now. IT IS ALSO KNOWN AS PHIL THE GROUNDHOG DAY! ( This one is a little tougher ... but nothing serious! Wait till the next two!! All the clues were prepared in advance and have not been changed BUT it has been a temptation! ) SO ... let's toss this one out to the Wolves! In 1977, a trip to Central America took Loren to this “mystery Country”.
It is a country in Central America. Once part of the Mayan, and very briefly the Spanish Empires, it was most recently affiliated with the British Empire, prior to gaining its independence in 1981. It has a diverse society, composed of many cultures and speaking many languages. It is the only country in Central America where English is an official language, although Creole and Spanish are also spoken. With 8,867 square miles of territory and 320,000 people (2008 est.), the population density is the lowest in the Central American region and one of the lowest in the world. Before the arrival of Europeans, it was part of the territory of the Maya. The Mopan Maya were the original inhabitants. The Maya civilization spread itself over the area beginning around 1500 BC and flourished until about AD 900. In the late classic period of Maya civilization (before A.D. 1000), as many as 400,000 people may have lived in the area. Some lowland Maya still occupied the area when Europeans arrived in the 1500s. In 1836, after the emancipation of Central America from Spanish rule, the British claimed the right to administer the region. In 1862 Great Britain formally declared it a British Crown Colony, subordinate to Jamaica. Constitutional reforms were initiated in 1954 and resulted in a new constitution ten years later. Britain granted it self-government in 1964. Progress toward independence, however, was hampered by a Guatemalan claim to sovereignty over the territory. When it finally attained full independence on September 21, 1981, Guatemala refused to recognize the new nation. About 1,500 British troops remained to protect it from the Guatemalan threat. Guatemala’s president formally recognized its independence in 1992. The following year the United Kingdom announced that it would end its military involvement. All British soldiers were withdrawn in 1994, apart from a small contingent of troops who remained to train troops. The national flower is the black orchid (Prosthechea cochleata), and The Keel Billed Toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus) is the National Bird. It is noted for its great, canoe-shaped bill, brightly colored green, blue, red and orange feathers. Toucans are found in open areas of the country with large trees.
