The answer to Saturday's location (#3) is Bangkok! (a search for "Krung Thep Maha Nakhon" would have given you the correct answer) Everyone got this right, once again! Did I make these clues toooo easy??? Don't worry ... they WILL get tougher!!!! The "friend" was actually the father of my girlfriend. Wanna come with? Hmmmm a free trip, with the girlfriend, duh! I didn't get to see much of the surrounding area, but seeing Bangkok was an experience in itself! You've probably have heard of people refer to various places as " Sin City? Well, there is only one TRUE "Sin City" in the world and that is, without a doubt, Bangkok in 1975!!! Anything you could possibly wish for was for sale ... and cheap! After the war ended in Vietnam I am sure that every hooker in Vietnam jumped in their 1955 Ford and beat feet for Thailand! I had thought that I was pretty 'street-wise' until then ... but I found myself wandering around most of the time with my eyes as wide as dinner plates!

Question for MONDAY 02FEB09: (#5) YEP...THAT IS THE DAY YOU SEND THE OLD MAN OFF TO WORK AGAIN. 3 hrs from now. IT IS ALSO KNOWN AS PHIL THE GROUNDHOG DAY! ( This one is a little tougher ... but nothing serious! Wait till the next two!! All the clues were prepared in advance and have not been changed BUT it has been a temptation! ) SO ... let's toss this one out to the Wolves! In 1977, a trip to Central America took Loren to this “mystery Country”.
It is a country in Central America. Once part of the Mayan, and very briefly the Spanish Empires, it was most recently affiliated with the British Empire, prior to gaining its independence in 1981. It has a diverse society, composed of many cultures and speaking many languages. It is the only country in Central America where English is an official language, although Creole and Spanish are also spoken. With 8,867 square miles of territory and 320,000 people (2008 est.), the population density is the lowest in the Central American region and one of the lowest in the world. Before the arrival of Europeans, it was part of the territory of the Maya. The Mopan Maya were the original inhabitants. The Maya civilization spread itself over the area beginning around 1500 BC and flourished until about AD 900. In the late classic period of Maya civilization (before A.D. 1000), as many as 400,000 people may have lived in the area. Some lowland Maya still occupied the area when Europeans arrived in the 1500s. In 1836, after the emancipation of Central America from Spanish rule, the British claimed the right to administer the region. In 1862 Great Britain formally declared it a British Crown Colony, subordinate to Jamaica. Constitutional reforms were initiated in 1954 and resulted in a new constitution ten years later. Britain granted it self-government in 1964. Progress toward independence, however, was hampered by a Guatemalan claim to sovereignty over the territory. When it finally attained full independence on September 21, 1981, Guatemala refused to recognize the new nation. About 1,500 British troops remained to protect it from the Guatemalan threat. Guatemala’s president formally recognized its independence in 1992. The following year the United Kingdom announced that it would end its military involvement. All British soldiers were withdrawn in 1994, apart from a small contingent of troops who remained to train troops. The national flower is the black orchid (Prosthechea cochleata), and The Keel Billed Toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus) is the National Bird. It is noted for its great, canoe-shaped bill, brightly colored green, blue, red and orange feathers. Toucans are found in open areas of the country with large trees.
WHERE IS HE? REMEMBER NOT TO POST YOUR ANSWER HERE!!!!(You still have until midnight PST to answer the previous question! If you are having troubles ... don't worry ... each question contains several clues that you can use, in like a google search, which will lead you right to the correct answer!)

The answer to Sunday's location (#4) was Jakarta! (A search for "Sunda Kelapa" or "Jabodetabek" would have given you the correct answer) So, it was off to the Island of Java to save the 3rd world! This was sort of a "Peace Corp" type thing where they provide you with housing, basic food, and no spending money ... all for a mere 14 hours of work teaching per day! I am convinced that those kids spoke better English than I did and they were just having fun jerking the "stupid American" around! Well, when my minimum 4 months contract was done, I decided the teaching thing wasn't for me! Jakarta is just like any other big city, and it stretches on forever! I did get to eat a lot of new and interesting foods ... you know: cat, snake, monkey ... and some of the dishes still remain unidentified, though!

Question for TUESDAY 03FEB09: (#6) Tuesday ... that day of the week they hold Mardi Gras on! (I have been really, really, really amazed how well everyone has been doing!!!! This one is a tad tougher and might require that you refer to a map to find a correct answer ... it is not a country, city, town, or even a dinky little village ... just a wide spot in the jungle with crocs and vampire bats ... I've heard Tarzan and Jane used to vacation here also between epic adventures! Just Kidding! ) While building an Orphanage in the jungle town of Poptun, Guatemala in 1977, Loren got the rare opportunity to visit a “mystery Ruin”.
It is one of the largest archaeological sites and urban centers of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. It is located in the archaeological region of the Petén Basin. In 1979 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The closest large modern settlements are Flores and Santa Elena, approximately 40 miles by road to the southwest. Though monumental architecture at the site dates to the 4th century BC, it reached its apogee during the Classic Period, ca. 200 to 900 AD, during which time the site dominated the Maya region politically, economically, and militarily while interacting with areas throughout Mesoamerica, such as central Mexican center of Teotihuacan. There is also evidence that it was even conquered by Teotihuacan in the 4th century. Following the end of the Late Classic Period, no new major monuments were built at the site and there is evidence that elite palaces were burned. These events were coupled with a gradual population decline, culminating with the site’s abandonment by the end of the 10th century. The ruins lie among lowland rainforest. Conspicuous trees at the park include gigantic ceiba, the sacred tree of the Maya; tropical cedar, and mahogany. Agouti, coatis, gray foxes, spider monkeys, howler monkeys, harpy eagles, falcons, ocellated turkeys, guans, toucans, macaws, green parrots and leaf-cutting ants can be seen there regularly. Jaguars, jaguarundis, and cougars are also said to roam in the park. For centuries this city was completely covered under jungle. Some second- or third-hand accounts of the ruin appeared in print starting in the 17th century, continuing through the writings of John Lloyd Stephens in the early 19th century. Due to the site's remoteness from modern towns, however, no explorers visited until Modesto Méndez and Ambrosio Tut visited it in 1848. Several other expeditions came to further investigate, map, and photograph it in the 19th century and the early 20th century. In 1951, a small airstrip was built at the ruins, which previously could only be reached by several days’ travel through the jungle on foot or mule. From 1956 through 1970, the University of Pennsylvania made major archeological excavations. In 1979, the Guatemalan government began a further archeological project, which continues to this day.
