the most important computer feature is processor and memory for doing tasks with the AMD and Pentium are most popular, the dual core and quad core only benefit if you have a lot of tasks going on at the same time other wise the higher processor speed gets things done faster with the memory.I don't prefer any specific brand just what is a good deal for the money .  popcorn

Since its overheating, have you tried cleaning the fan? Here is a nice site for cleaning computers, if you search you will find many others

http://www.wiscocomputing.com/articles/maintenance.htm

Overheating is generally a sign of a mechanical problem. This may help you get more use out of your current computer until you can afford another one.  Smile

You beat me to it NotDeadYet laughing

I had to take the cover off the PC tower and I have a regular fan blowing on it to keep it cool/keep from overheating because it's a Sony VAIO and the parts are propietary (meaning they make them different so you HAVE to pay more $$ to replace them  cussing ) so I did this instead - it WORKS!!!  headbang

my boyfriend is an IT guy and what he says don't say "I'm only going to email and type" as if those applications are ok on a lower end computer. Browsing the web these days actually requires a fairly good computer. Web designers assume people upgrade their systems often.Frankly you should buy the best you can afford (with out doing financing with crazy interest rates!).  Buying the best you can afford is especially important if you plan on using it for a long time. Buy the latest Operating System (Windows Vista) because even XP will no longer be supported soon. Ram is extremely important and is commonly undersold. Infact if you buy a slightly cheaper computer adding more ram (fairly easy in most laptops) is always a good idea. Vista needs 2 gig of RAM (different then memory) at the very least and 3 to great.

People often complain about their computers not being able to view a certain sweeps. Often times the basic computer system (especially one low on ram) might have trouble loading a page. It could be caused by other things (like Dialup!) but having a good system is key to being able to enter sweeps.

That's my two cents from what my boyfriend has taught me. It's really up to you. Do your own research ....and I wouldn't reccommend trusting everything you hear from "box" store employees. They often aren't as educated on computers as they sound. My boyfriend frequently overhears them misinforming people and corrects them.
Good luck!

If you are low income or disabled there may be resources in your area to help you obtain a computer. Many community centers offer cheap reconditioned computers, and some places you can learn to build one yourself, then you get to keep it.
Here are some examples, there are many others
