any ideas? the are for birds/pigeons usually in the middle east, but exactly where, I am not sure.

This was not easy to find, but I searched until I found a similar photograph. Here is the site link:

Scroll down until you see the photo with this caption:

From the clues, I have gotten as far as North of Cairo, Egypt. I am still looking for WHERE north of Cairo.

The ancient port/city with the mother of all libraries to the north is the city of Alexandria and the Alexandria Library.  I went with the Nile Delta too.
