Do, or do not. There is no try ~ Yoda

I am so mad. My dumb dog has started chewing the walls. yes, folks chewing the walls. And hes not leaving the drywall on the floor either. He is eating it. Two holes already. started in the last month. Called  a behavior person for dogs. Her first question. Are you feeding him? Of course, I am feeding him. If only it were that easy. So, she says shelties need lots of attention are you playing with him? yes, the kids play with him everyday. If this keeps up im going to have to get rid of him. I cant have him chewing walls. It figures I would get a retarted dog. oh, And my daughters I-Dog wont shut up. Scared the nonsense out of me last night when I walked into the kitchen it started beeping and barking. took 5 yr off my life im telling ya. any advice about the dog situation would be apprecitated. I dont want to get rid of him but this is crazy. Also, he isnt home alot by himself. Im here all the time so I know that isnt it. Its always something ya know.

Take the batteries out of the I-Dog.... :-)

If the dog likes to "eat" a particular area of wall, I might spray it with some of the stuff they put on dogs paws so they don't lick them.  Might require you to repaint later if it stains, but painting easier than drywalling...

Good luck.

When you see the doggie eating the wall, spray him with water from a water bottle.  They hate to be sprayed in the face and he will soon associate eating the wall with being sprayed.  Worked with us over doggie jumping on people when they came in the door!!

I would also get the stuff that Johnny is talking about ~ great answer!!

You know, I really over think things. Did I think about taking the batterys out. nooooo. I thought about stuffing it under the towels in the closet.  :smt001 . And The dog eats the wall at night when we are sleeping. Its such a nice thing to wake up too.  :smt010 I would leave him in the garage but he will bark all night. I dont know. I will try spraying the wall. cant hurt. thanks.

How old is the dog?

Do you have a crate you could leave the dog in at night?

When we first got our last puppy (he's nine now), we kept him in a crate next to the bed at night.

Try Nylabones or other hard chewies that are flavored.  It should help.  Also a Kong (Large rubber toy with a hole in the middle) filled with Peanut butter.

He may need to chew and these would give him viable alternatives.  I also hate to suggest this, but a doggie playmate may be the ticket.  I had a dog that ate my doors, window sills... even went through a window when my husband left to go out of town.  I could be home and she would do it.  She was missing him, not me.  I got her her own puppy and it all stopped on the spot.  She loved him, they were inseparable. It was a miracle for us.

Good luck.

And I thought I was the only one with a retarded pet.  (The cat that pees in the litter box but poops on my carpet - go figure)  I had a dog that ate our steps once.  We sent him to live with my grandpa in the woods.  He has acres and acres of land to roam so he can eat all he wants.  Good luck with the plaster eating hound

:smt006 Our wonderful dog has never chewed up anything from the time we brought her home. We started her out in a crate everynight. This also housetrained her,  she has never gone potty in the house. Instant housetrained. After the first 6 months we got rid of the crate, but you don't have to as they begin to think of it as their own safe place.

he is almost two. and this just started. When we first got him he would chew on his paws until they were raw. He stopped doing that after a couple of weeks of being here. now this. I really like him and the kids are just crazy about him but this cant continue. We dont own this house its a rental. We put a 300. pet deposit down but thats not the point. this isnt our house. I cant have him tearing up someone elses property. im gonna try the spray like johnny said and see if that works. otherwise its back to the shelter for him.  :smt089 thanks guys.

This sounds like a disorder that my cat had.  The cat would lick herself non-stop.  I didn't think anything of it until the vet asked.  It's not normal behavior.  For the dog to chew his paws until they bleed is not normal behavior either.  I might take him to the vet to get blood work done.  We found out that my cat had feline leukeimia.

I have two Australian Shepherds and they are very hyper.  They have to have alot of attention and a job/exercise/or play.  The crate, and the spray bottle are your two best bets at stopping him.  He seems like he is up at night when you guys are asleep.  He needs to be sleeping at night so he can't get into trouble.  A crate is the best place(at least until he is trained) for that and also when you guys are not home.

The spray bottle works when he does misbehave & you catch him.

One of my Aussie's, Chloe, sometimes takes to licking the inside of her front leg.  She will lick it until it is raw.  The vet says that it is called lick anomaly and that it is probably because she is bored.  We try breaking up her routine by taking her for walks in different areas.  She enjoys the variety.

Besides the Kongs with peanut butter or treats you can also buy these balls that you can fill with treats and/or dry dog food.  The dog rolls it around on the floor to get the food out.  It helps to keep him busy and entertained.
