really need to stop smoking, not only because, of the cost but, because, of my health. I need encouragement. It's going to be a long road if I do it. I'm not sure which day I'll start but, I need to. I can't buy the patches or gum, lack of funds since they are really expensive so it will have to be cold turkey.

Wish me luck and support/encouragement on my near future goal to STOP SMOKING! Oye, this is going to be hell.

You go - You can do it.

I quit almost 9 years ago after smoking for 33 years.
I will tell you right now it is not easy and you will struggle for quite a while.
I think it was about 9 months before I really stopped craving cigarettes.

But let me tell you - It is worth it.

Let me know what I can do to help

Both you and 3mnkids1 - rock
You CAN do it!

And 3mnkids, good luck to you too! I made a decision, thought about it all day. Tonight will be my last ciggy. Same goes for you, pm me if you need some support!

I decided to start a blog. If anyone wants to follow my progress, here's the link. I'm still working on it though. It will be about everything as I go.

sunny  Good for you! Just saying you are going to quit is the first step!  From my own personal experience it is best to set a date and to make sure there are not any cigarettes around. If you can't afford the patches or nicotine gum, be sure to stock up on gum, sunflower seeds, candy or suckers. (I like the atomic fire balls and especially the sunflower seeds. I get them both at the Dollar Tree) If you can, take the money that you would normally be spending in a week and put it in a jar. It's amazing how fast it adds up. I am a saver so I really enjoy seeing my bank account grow! That was enough incentive for me. Think of something you would like to be able to buy with that money you saved. Even if it's something small like a dinner out with your hubby. I saved mine up for my annual trip to Michigan to visit my family. The money I saved in the last year paid for my airline ticket with plenty left over.
The best incentive for you are your children. They will be so happy to have you in their lives for many more years.  Check out all the benefits that begin in as little as 20 minutes:

I want to encourage you Michele sunny

I just quit myself & have not smoked a cigarette in 9 days now. After smoking about a pack a day for 35 years now this is the first time after my many failed attempts that I am doing this cold turkey. In the past I've tried all the helpers, patches, gum, nic out, and on & on but none of these things worked for me. I eventually went right back to smoking - Any excuse would do  cry

This time the first thing I did was truly decide the time was right and that I am ready to quit for real this time.
Secondly I went to the library and on a whim picked up this book called "Stop Smoking" by Mathew Aldrich. I think this gentleman deserves huge props for the knowledge & encouragement he gives to smokers in this book. I'm nearing the end of the book now but he had me hooked with the first chapter. It was very helpful to me to have someone understand exactly how I felt, what I was going though & best of all, didn't judge me for it. When you better understand the reasons why you smoke & continue to smoke, you see things in a whole new light.

I am rooting for you and anyone else who is ready to quit. Please don't give up! I feel so much better already physically and emotionally. You can make this time, the last time you put yourself through this. I'm almost afraid to jinx myself by saying this but it's a lot easier than I could have ever imagined this time. You can do this.

Best of Luck to you & a big congratulations to all those who have quit!!
Diane

I quit smoking 21 years ago. My husband and I both did. One of the main reasons was because it was so expensive and we were poor. Can you imagine. I thought it was bad then. How much do they cost these days anyways? I know the tax went into affect yesterday.

I will say a word of encouragement for everyone trying to quit each day. You can do this. Just like any habit it can be difficult but say every day I can do this. Pat yourself on the back each day because you are worthy of it just for making it through.

Thank you all for the encouraging words and congrats to those who are now smoke free.

pmeek, thank you for sharing that blog. I added it to mine. I'm still trying to work on it and make the blog more interesting but, I am still learning how to use it.

I want a cigarette so bad right now. It's 1:pm and my last one was before going to bed last night. I've been pacing, fidgeting, etc. I even have periods of tears. I have quit 3 times in the past, all during pregancy and I'd have an excuse each time to pick it back up. I don't want to fail at this, I'm praying I don't.

Good luck Diane, thank you for sharing your story. 9 days is a great accomplishment.

I need to go to town but, I need someone to go with me. I don't think my will power is up enough to go alone.

3mnkids1 how are you doing today?

I've been a smoker for 25 years and had chosen April 1st as my quit date. I figured it would be kind of ironic to quit on April Fool's Day! But I'm sticking with it. Tried all the patches and gum, never worked, so this one is cold turkey. I wish you all the luck with quitting. I know it will be hard but the result is going to be SO worth it. I'm putting money in a jar for every time I would have bought a pack, and hopefully I can pull off something good for my 25th wedding anniversary next year. Good luck to you all, you have plenty of friends here that support you and wish you the best!! Smile

Just keep telling yourself its not always going to be like this. dont give in!. I know its hard. I have fought the urge several times to just run up to the store and get a pack. Im not going to! This is not going to beat me! I wont let it.  you can do it!

Well, late tonight I gave in. This is so hard!! I'm going to try to get some patches or something. I really wish I could get the e-cig or something. Keep going everyone, you're doing great! I'm going to try again as soon as I can get some type of help. In the mean time, I'm going to try and go as long as I can without them.

It's ok, you'll find the way to give it up that works for you but in the meantime don't feel guilty. Be proud of yourself just for trying and find comfort in the fact that you will quit someday.  sunny

Hey guys, just had a chance to read a few posts and saw this one.  Hope you are both still doing okay with the smoking.  I quit AGAIN in January.  I quit for 14 years and then when going through my divorce - picked it up again.  I know you will think it's funny but I used hypnosis.  Everyone always laughs and everyone has their opinion on hypnosis but all I can say is that it worked for me.  This go 'round I just quit cold turkey and it has been much harder.  I have cravings everyday but I am still "smoke free".  The hardest is when we go out for drinks.  Nothing better than a smoke and a margarita but HONEY - DON'T EVEN THINK OF TAKING AWAY MY MARGARITAS:)   I will only give up one vice at a time.  Good luck to my good friends

Congratulations to each and everyone of you who are gonna take the no nicotine plunge!!!!!!!!

I did it 25+ years ago and would you believe that there are times to this day that I want to
sit right down and have a cigarette to relax.  The worst times is on the creek/lake bank just
after baiting up and throwing it into the water.  Just a flashing memory, I guess.

A very nice older lady helped me to quit by suggesting that I get a package of plastic straws
and chew on one when I wanted the cigarettes.  Well it worked great until I decided a mint
would taste good too.........well the real story is stick with the straws they don't cause weight
gain.

Good Luck and just remember your lungs have a terrible time giving up the nicotine that is
already in place but they are gonna thank you later on when you want a breath of fresh air.

Oh and remember lungs are not the only thing that fill up with nicotine.......blood vessels do
also.  My sister-in-law lost alot of leg veins because of nicotine.  She's gone now but I don't
want to lose friends here on SA because of nicotine habits.

Congratulations to those that have quit and good luck to everyone, including those who are already quitters.

3mnkids, same thing happened to me. Received buy 1 get 1 coupons yesterday and then $$ off coupons today.  nono

My mom posted on my blog last night, she said she was going to send me some gum and patches. I also emailed the hospital for some help, I figure calling them isn't going to help so I might as well contact someone else!

I want to quit, don't get me wrong. I like smoking but, I want to quit.

As for the coughing, don't know same thing happened to me. And going the entire day without one and then smoking one, I was soooooooo light headed I almost passed out, lol.

Hey...I quit three weeks ago, after about 40 years.........Please, use a product, if you need it......It is worth the cost.............Though I know that I am still very much in the danger zone, this time the nicotine gum has been a godsend........I tried the patches in the past and they didn't help me...........I found them too itchy and irritating.........I wanted to share what I do to help relieve the need for the actual physical act of smoking.......When I find my hands reaching for the cigarette that isn't there, I pick up a pen and pretend.  Holding it like a cigarette and even pretending to smoke it, while enjoying the nicotine the gum is feeding me, works for me in easing the need.  An  outsider would think I've lost my mind, and maybe I sometimes feel like a little kid playing a game, but, heck, whatever works..........I wish you the best.  Only the wealthy can afford to smoke nowadays so we poor folks gotta do what we gotta do......By the way, after only three weeks I already feel such a surge of energy that I find myself dancing all around the house, a habit of mine that had been dwindling in past years...........and I like it!  Rock on!

This all sounds so familiar and I know just how you feel - It's incredibly hard. When your ready, just try again and try not to be disappointed in yourself. The companies who manufacture cigarettes know exactly what they are doing and it's really not your fault it's so hard to quit, so don't be angry at yourself. Good luck to you & your husband!

good luck to you!  I quit cold turkey 3 1/2 years ago.  I undertook a huge project at the same time, getting my house ready to sell.  I haven't had a cigarette since.  My house sold the first week I had it on the market.  Now I use the cigarette money to buy expensive European clogs. Waving

My aunt quit cold turkey my little cousin saw the movie they show them at school ,
about how your lungs turn black , and you get breathing disorders and how your teeth turn
yellow and die early , she came home crying and pleading she was so upset my aunt got
scared and didnt touch another cigarette and she was smoking 3 packs a day.
Everytime she looked at a cigarette she remembered her daughter and how frantic she was.

I used to smoke and quit almost 17 years ago when I found out I was pregnant, what better motivation. I can actually breath now.  If that isn't reason enough, think of this. I hate to sound harsh, but I'll give you the best reason of all.  My brother-in-law was a heavy smoker and drinker.  He died last week at 54. We know that smoking had a lot to do with it.  QUIT NOW!

Nicoderm, Nicorette, etc. offer free samples -- which when I received mine was a whole two weeks supply.  Walmart often has the free sample listed on their free sample page......definitely  do try it -- I smoked for almost 40 years, and quit almost a year ago.  I have tried many times in previous years and was never successful -- the most I made it was 9 days.  I really believed that I would never be able to quit without going crazy.  I have always enjoyed smoking!  I would not have made it without the patches/gum.  I also learned a trick many years ago that "You cannot take something away without replacing it with something else or something better --  FOR WHAT WOULD FILL THE VOID".  This is a very wise statement.  My biggest concern was gaining weight because I absolutely hate being chubby (it makes me so depressed and I hate myself).  So.....I knew I loved mint -- so I took a straw that was somewhat fatter then the normal size.  I smoked every cigarette I had ( I try to never waste anything) and have never bought another carton.  I cut the straw with scissors into pieces the size of a cigarette -- took a cotton ball and pulled it into a piece that could be inserted into the straw firmly (be so very careful to make it big enough that you cannot inhale the cotton and stink it down your throat -- be very careful that that cannot happen)  and would absorb enough of the artificial flavor mint extract that I had bought at Walmart.  I liked the peppermint better then the wintergreen.  Everytime I wanted a cigarette I would dunk the straw into the extract and use it just like a cigarette -- I could feel the wonderful mint taste going down my throat and enjoyed it so much, in fact so much more than smoking a cigarette -- and I was not inhaling any of the poisons the I would get from a cigarette.  I told myself that I HAD LOST NOTHING -- JUST GAINED SOMETHING BETTER -- AND SO MUCH CHEAPER.  I had none of the nicotine withdrawal symptoms thanks to the patches/gum.  Even using a straw with water in a glass helps because many of us have "mouth hunger" and need something in our mouths for comfort.     So find out what you can replace your cigarettes with, definitely request free samples of the gum/patches and write down on a  piece of paper to look at when you need to all the things you are gaining by not smoking -- and what you are using to "replace it with".    Give it a try -- it worked for me!  And, yes I have gained 10 pounds in a year -- now I have to find out how to lose that weight and get down to wearing a size 8 again.  Hopefully better weather and summer will help that cause I can make myself so very busy.....Wish you all the luck in the world and let us know how you are doing.  Freebie King has shown Nicoderm free samples several times and I believe I saw it on their site recently.  I know I saw it on the Walmart web site too --- look for free samples.  Bless You!
