Not sure I understood.  $175 of $244 is a great insurance!

My glasses will cost about $400 and insurance will pay $150.  Just spent $350 on an $800 bill to the ophthalmologist.  And don't even ask about our son's asthma meds!

I'd gladly take that kind of coverage on glasses. A couple of years ago I thought I'd save a bundle for my new glasses and take care of my nieces need for new glasses by using one of those same-day "buy one get a second pair free" places. Well they fail to mention that the frames alone start at $200 until after you've been examined. Then there's the lenses, anti-scratch, uv and anti-glare coatings and protection plan. None of which is mentioned up front THEN they tell me that MY prescription is going to take a week to make but my nieces will be done in an hour.  cussing Basically, they wound up costing me $500 for the two pairs even though one was "free". I could have gone to LensCrafters and got two pairs in a couple of hours for that price. I miss having insurance. With my bad eyesight that's only getting worse, the cost is going to keep rising.

sunny I just went a couple of months ago. By the time I got the progressive lens, transitions, exam and frame it was over $500. Thank God I had just got my AARP card. They took 40% off so my bill was $308.  I didn't complain though. I was glad to get them even without insurance. I was loving that AARP. It has already more than paid for itself considering it was only $12 a year. Plus I have saved more on motel rooms with it.
So if you get that AARP application in the mail. Send it in. It will save you lots of money.
And you don't have to wait. My brother got his at age 45 and he has also been enjoying the savings.

I had my first 'professional' eye exam this spring ~ the guy couldn't believe that I was 37 and hadn't ever had an eye exam...eyes were pretty much perfect, but said I would have trouble out of my astigmatism eventually.

I've had eye problems since I was little. They corrected when I was an adult and now, I'm starting to have a few problems again. I don't have insurance so when I take my kids to see the eye doctor (They both wear glasses for 2 different reasons) on the 9th, I'm going to ask him if he can fit me in somehow and if it's possible to make payment arrangements. The school my children go to sent in a form to the Lions club, they are paying for my children to get eyeglasses and exams. I thought that was really nice of them to do for us. We qualified based on our income levels.
