E. coli warning Prompts Massive Frozen Pizza Recall
414,000 Cases Affected
Health Risk: High

Public health officials are urging consumers to throw away any Totino's or Jeno's brand frozen pizzas that contain pepperoni in the wake of a multi-state outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections.

"We took action on that basis as a precaution, because of the possibility that a link might exist," said General Mills spokesman Tom Forsythe.

The company is asking people to throw away any pizza that they may have purchased that is being recalled.

The manufacturer, General Mills, has recalled all frozen pepperoni pizzas produced at their Wellston, Ohio, plant. More than 120 million of these pizzas have been distributed since the beginning of July.

Public health investigators in Tennessee and elsewhere have linked a growing number of people infected with E. coli O157:H7 to pizzas produced at the Ohio plant. The investigation is ongoing, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture and other agencies are working with General Mills to identify the source of the problem.

To date, at least 21 lab-confirmed cases have been identified in 10 states -- Tennessee, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, Wisconsin and South Dakota. At least 10 people have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported.

"If you have any of these pizzas in your freezer, we recommend you throw them out," said William E. Keene, Ph.D., M.P.H., senior communicable disease epidemiologist at the Oregon Department of Human Services Public Health Division. "No cases have been reported in Oregon or other Western states, but this is a national recall. We don't want anyone to risk serious illness."

The specific products covered by the recall are as follows:

*Totino's Original Crisp Crust Party Pizza, Pepperoni, 10.2 oz.
*Totino's Original Crisp Crust Party Pizza, Classic Pepperoni, 10.2 oz.
*Totino's Original Crisp Crust Party Pizza, Pepperoni Trio, 10.2 oz.
*Totino's Original Crisp Crust Party Pizza, Three Meat Sausage, Canadian Style Bacon & Pepperoni, 10.5 oz.
*Totino's Original Crisp Crust Party Pizza, Combination Sausage & Pepperoni, 10.7 oz.
*Totino's Original Crisp Crust Party Pizza, Supreme Sausage & Pepperoni with Green Peppers & Onions, 10.9 oz.
*Jeno's Crisp 'n Tasty Pizza, Pepperoni, 6.8 oz.
*Jeno's Crisp 'n Tasty Pizza, Combination Sausage and Pepperoni, 7.0 oz.
*Jeno's Crisp 'n Tasty Pizza, Supreme Sausage and Pepperoni With Green Peppers and Onion, 7.2 oz.

Any consumers concerned about an illness should contact a physician. Anyone diagnosed by a physician as having an illness related to E. coli O157:H7 is also urged to contact state and local public health authorities.

Consumers can contact Totino's / Jeno's for product replacement by clipping the UPC (bar code) symbol from each pizza box and sending their UPC's, along with their name and address to:

Totino's / Jeno's
P.O. Box 200 - Pizza
Minneapolis, MN  55440-0200

The product itself should be thrown away.  Consumers with additional questions about the relall should contact the company at (800) 949-9055

About E. Coli

E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea and dehydration. The very young, seniors and persons with compromised immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness.

Bodee LLC, Inc. Issues A Voluntary Nationwide Recall of All Encore Tabs, a Product Marketed as a Dietary Supplement

Contact:
Bodee LLC
(800) 935-0296

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Century City, CA – November 21, 2007- Bodee LLC, 2222 Avenue of the Stars, 702E, Century City, CA 90067, announced today that it is conducting a voluntary nationwide recall of all the company's supplement product sold under the name Encore Tabs.

Bodee LLC is conducting this recall after being informed by representatives of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that lab analysis by FDA of Encore Tabs samples found the product contains potentially harmful, undeclared ingredients. FDA asserts that its chemical analysis revealed that one lot of Encore Tabs contains aminotadalafil, an analog of tadalafil, the active ingredient of a FDA-approved drug used for Erectile Dysfunction (ED). FDA maintains Aminotadalafil is close in structure to tadalafil and is expected to possess a similar pharmacological and adverse event profile. This undeclared chemical poses a threat to consumers because it may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs (such as nitroglycerin) and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels.

San Antonio Company Recalling Mexican Candy

Contact:
Texas Dept. of State Health Services
(512) 458-7111 or 1-888-963-7111

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- December 4, 2007 -- San Antonio company is voluntarily recalling jars of candy imported from Mexico after testing by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) found elevated lead levels that could cause health problems.

Villa-Mex Imports, Inc., is recalling Barrilito, a dark brown thick syrup sold in 3.3 ounce (100 gram) glass barrel-shaped jars with white plastic lids. The yellow label shows the name “Barrilito” in red outline letters. The label also reads: Productos Avila, S.A. de C.V. Puerto Malaque 1379 Col. Sta. Maria Guadalajara, Jal. Mexico.

DSHS officials said the problem is with the product, not with the distributor, Villa-Mex Imports.

Recent laboratory tests show lead levels above the 0.1 parts per million lead level considered to be a potential public health hazard by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Candy samples ranged from 0.101 to 0.132 parts per million of lead. The tests were part of DSHS product surveillance conducted over the last several months.

Eating products containing lead can be especially harmful to infants, young children and pregnant women. Too much lead intake can result in delayed mental and physical development and learning deficiencies. Children who have high blood lead levels may be tired or cranky, not have much appetite, not be able to pay attention, have headaches, vomit, be constipated, be clumsy or weak or not be able to sleep. Some children who have lead poisoning may not look or act sick.

DSHS officials say consumers who have the recalled product should not eat it and should return it or throw it away. The only way to know if a child has a high blood lead level is to have a blood lead test. People concerned about blood lead levels should call their doctor or health clinic about testing.

Listeria Contamination in Queso Fresco, Fresh Cheese

Contact:
Jessica Chittenden
518-457-3136

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --Brooklyn, NY-- December 6, 2007 --- New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker today warned consumers not to consume certain “Queso Fresco, Fresh Cheese,” made by Peregrina Cheese Corp., 342 Ten Eyck St., Brooklyn, New York 11206 due to possible Listeria contamination.

The product is contained in a foil wrapped, 14 oz. net weight package with a code of 3973. The consumer warning affects all packages with this code.

A routine sample of the cheese, taken by an inspector from the Division of Milk Control and Dairy Services on November 27, 2007, was subsequently tested by the Department’s Food Laboratory and discovered to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. On December 6, 2007, the manufacturer was notified of the presence of Listeria monocytogenes and the company voluntarily recalled the product.

Listeria contaminated product could cause Listeriosis, a disease that usually causes mild flu-like symptoms in healthy individuals; however in immune-compromised individuals, meningitis and blood poisoning can occur. Pregnant women are also considered a high-risk group, as Listeriosis can also result in stillbirths.

To date, no illnesses are known by the Department to be associated with this product.
