I really, really wanted a Prius, but I bought a Yaris because I couldn't accord the hybrid. It gets about 32 mpg. I'm happy.

We're big vehicle people.  However, these cars would never work for us.  We're long-distance drivers (for leisure, not work).  Our longest driving destination being Florida.  These cars would be more a pain in the arse than it's worth to us. crazy tongue

A couple of weeks ago, I drove to south Jersey, my longest trip ever, and it cost me $30 in gas and tolls. I was peeved enough having to spend this. As it is, I walk and take public transportation to save gas and get in shape, and I leave the car in the driveway half the week. It's different, though, when you're a mother with little kids.

While in Jersey, I gassed up and bought a tankful at $2.53 a gallon.

New Jersey usually has lower gases prices than many other states, because they have refineries in Elizabeth.

I've also been reading some interesting views on this.  The first is that the government is not ready for us to go all hybrid.  They want to keep on going with the gas.  Also, they have the know-how already to make faster, higher-mileage, longer-distance hybrids than they do now; but they choose not to.

The views as to what is behind the ever-increasing gas prices is that it is to push us to the brink of public acceptance of more oil drilling in Alaska.  Right now, the public is supposedly against it; and they're just doing this to push us into a corner.

Oil has peaked, and the days of cheap gas are over.

Peak Oil

Whatever your situation, it's best to adjust your lifestyle to the reality that gas is not going to return to 1990s prices. Economic development in China and India adds to the competition for *finite* oil supplies.

I just spent 7 months living in London, where gas was running almost 1 pound per litre.....with the pound at about $2.05 right now and climbing, that's pushing $8 per gallon!  I'll just keep thinking of $4 as half price.  laughing

My husband has to drive an hour both ways to work and it is killing us.  We get pretty good gas mileage in the car, but he has no one around that he can carpool with so it really takes a hit on the ol' paycheck each week.

Yes they are pushing to start drilling in Alaska.  They will not be happy until they do.  I just don't understand why these people can't be happy leaving well enough alone.  These billionaire oilmen want more.  Greed ~ greed and and greed!!!  That is all that it is!

Ping .. you are right about the GREED part. I know what they report to us but they had record earnings and a large bonus last year when they spiked.
Gas here is on the average 3.10 a gallon. I am in Central Illinios in a rural town near Decatur IL.
We have to drive a distance no matter where we go it costs!  I know my choice but the "big guys" are killing us!  Not to mention the prices of everything else that climb when gas prices go up because it costs more to deliver.
I could go all day because they make me so mad  Smile

This is gonna hit the retailers for Christmas. They're already getting jittery, rolling out the sales before Halloween.

As I said, the days of cheap gas are over. We need to buy more fuel efficient cars and drive less. There are also some things you can do to increase your gas mileage, including getting a tuneup, keeping your tiles fully inflated and changing your oil filter. If you keep stuff in your trunk, take it out. It cuts your gas mileage.

This is an excellent site that gives plenty of information:

Current gas prices here (depending on which side of town one is in) range from $3.04/gallon to $2.83/gallon...I personally have never had to pay over 3.00/gallon in my life.  I remember the days of .49 cent gas and $3000 new cars.... sigh
