Don't hate me cuz you ain't me!

« on: March 27, 2008, 02:44:36 AM »

It's been a very long time since I've seen or even heard of a decent horror flick since High Tension.  I think my wait is over.

Inside(À L'INTÉRIEUR) http://www.gomorrahy.com/trailer-park/inside-a-l-interieur.htm

A review from Bloody-Disgusting's Mr. Disgusting:

Quote
Quite possibly the scariest film I’ve seen since THE RING remake is Dimension Films’ INSIDE (A l’interieur), which was co-directed by first timers Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo. The duos creation is something I have never seen in a French film – it’s a unique and artistic vision that transcends into one of the most grounded bloodbaths in the history of our beloved genre. If there was one film to compare INSIDE to, it’s John Carpenter’s classic HALLOWEEN (seriously).

It’s impossible to really give a good analysis of INSIDE without ruining some of the plot, which is unfortunate because I almost believe one should know NOTHING before viewing. But here we are and here we go – there’s no turning back now…

INSIDE is a trip back to the late ‘70s, early ‘80s when the idea behind a good horror film was created on a level of minimalism. Most of the film is contained within a small space, thus creating a high level of claustrophobia and anxiety. In addition, the plot is razor thin, keeping everything simple and to the point. Sarah (Alysson Paradis) is a young photographer who recently lost her husband in a car crash. She’s alone on Christmas and is going to have her baby the next day – even if they have to induce labor. She’s so sad and miserable that you almost believe she doesn’t even want to have the child. After her trip to the hospital Sarah returns home only to be visited late in the night by a mysterious woman (Beatrice Dalle) who wants to get inside. Soon enough we learn that this woman has one goal in mind… retrieve the baby from inside Sarah’s womb.

There are two wonderful things about this film; the first being that the movie features two strong women as leads; the second is that both of these women have motives that are so focused and believable that you almost don’t know whose side to take. The screenplay for INSIDE is solid, grounded, believable and most of all captivating. Our two main characters are developed beautifully into women that we both care about and can sympathize with, making every moment that much more suspenseful.

Besides the gore, which we’ll get to momentarily, the centerpiece of this masterpiece is the directing by Maury and Bustillo and breathtaking cinematography by Laurent Bares. The entire film is an emotional ride built simply on the structures and aesthetics of the environment. What you are about to witness is a film that can be compared to a classic painting by Michelangelo or Leonardo DeVinci. The rooms are low-lit with an odd haze and a soft yellow look, only something about it is unsettling… maybe it hits almost too close to home? Sarah lives in a typical suburban that many viewers will feel like they can relate to. The way its shot makes the film feel ultra dense; every scene, every moment, every single second is claustrophobic making it hard to breathe. INSIDE is like looking deep into the soul of those classic paintings where you become so engulfed in their beauty that it takes your breath away.

This is cinema at it’s finest.

And then there’s blood… lots and lots and lots of blood.

The Woman (we never do find out her name) is determined to get her hands on Sarah’s baby and will no anything to get it. Once she gets into the house the level of chaos unloads so quickly that there’s not a second to digest. She slashes Sarah across the face and then chases her to the bathroom where she locks herself in. Throughout the film, various people stop by to check on Sarah, which results in a bloodbath of epic proportions. This is quite possibly the most violent, realistic and bloody slasher film ever assembled, ending on such a gut-wrenching note that there’s not a single person who could walk out of that theater feeling normal.

Furthermore, INSIDE is terrifying, one of the scariest movies I have ever seen in my life - think HALLOWEEN, only bloody as hell. Early in the film, after attempting to trick her way into Sarah’s house, The Woman (dressed in all black) appears outside the back porch door glaring inside. She stares with hate and determination, only we don’t know her motive at that time. The moment is so incredibly unsetting only escalating from there. She punches the glass and runs off as the cops come to check in on Sarah’s call. There’s no one there and this mysterious person has vanished. Relax Sarah everything is fine! Of course it isn’t - The Woman is now in the house. She blends into the atmosphere and appears in the background of nearly every shot. She’s there, I swear I just saw her… but maybe that was just my imagination? Then as quick as she vanishes she appears through the blackest of shadows like she’s walking right of the thin air (the only time I have EVER seen a shot like this was in HALLOWEEN 2!) As the film progresses we learn a little more about her motives and determination. Her sanity begins to snap and this confident, looming, uncompromising individual turns into an axe murderer from hell - only her weapon of choice is a pair of scissors. She will do anything to get Sarah out of that bathroom and loses it when she can’t get the door open; she kicks it, stabs it and freaks out so hard that she even accidentally hurts herself. It’s such a “human” moment and something quite rare in this genre.

Sans a few odd moments that had me scratching my head (instead of escaping from The Woman, some cops attempt to turn the power back on?) INSIDE is the perfect horror film and easily one of the greatest home invasion movies ever made. It will toy with your emotions, keep you on the edge of your seat and eventually scar you. Mark my words, not a single genre fan will be disappointed with this work of art… that’s painted in blood.

Score: 10 / 10

OK that sounds good but I don't know if I can handle all that gore  laughing I had to turn away from Saw 4 it was a little too gross.

I do like a good horror movie so I am sure I will check it out. I refuse to watch Hostel 2.

After the first one I figured the second one would be too disgusting. Thanks for the heads up on this new one. My daughter will love it. She is into horror big time. She was in a little clip in the Troma films.

She created a new fake blood mixture. At least she wasn't a tromette.  laughing

I love horror movies and this sounds very good.  popcorn

Hostel was good if you can get thru the first 45 minutes of the movie being like a mini porno.  laughing  I hated that. I still watch it but skip all that T & A... Asian Horror movies are the best IMO... I love em. A little hard to find sometimes but worth it when you can find them. I have a nice little collection of them now.

Thank you ~ that was my words exactly!!!  When Jimmie brought that one home I questioned him about what he did bring home!  I didn't believe him for awhile ~lol!

Hostel 2 wasn't nearly as gory as 1!  I was surprised that it was as tame as it was...

Inside sound different...now I have to say that I LOVED SAW!  It was one of the most original horror movies that I have ever seen.  I like things that I can't figure out!

I like porn so that wasn't a problem for me  Booty

For me, a good horror film must consist of a various combination of fear factors.  I like horror that allows me to walk in the prey's shoes...and sometimes the predator's depending on the situation.  A pointless slasher movie gets boring real quick.

Ping, I think you'd like High tension.  This one takes EVERYONE by surprise!  You won't figure it out until the end because it never alludes to anything.  http://www.hightensionmovie.com/  It's extreme blood and guts and I do mean EXTREME so keep that in mind!

Blood and guts don't bother me...I have kids laughing  I'll have to try to find that one popcorn

To me it seems like most horror movies are just recycles ~ so I love anything that has something different!

I LOVE horror films! I just usually have to watch them after the kids go to bed and by then either I am online or too caught up in my tv shows, lol.

I want to see 30 days of night, heard it was pretty good.

LMAO!!  I hear ya!  laughing

Blockbuster has High Tension.  It's not a new release but it may or may not still be on the new release wall...or if you do video renting on-line, that may be easier.  We currently don't do that so I dunno...

Miki-I didn't like 30 Days of Night.  I guess I expected more.  I'll leave it at that  laughing

3mnkids1-There's a new asian horror flick I've tried winning recently.  darn, I can't remember the name of it  scratch  A member here by the name of sky something won it and he ribbed me about the win.  If you have any idea about what I'm talking about let me know because I don't  laughing

I love horror movies, My absolute favorite of all times ( borderline obsessed) is Dawn of the Dead 1978. there have not been too many out lately that are worth watching. I have managed to find a few oldies from the 80's that are pretty good that also give you that jump factor, which is so funny when your kids are watching too. Hell Night, My Bloody Valentine and One Dark Night from the 80's are good, but you cant rent them. thank God for EBAY and Amazon.
Most of the horror movies today are all remakes and not good remakes or they are about sex. I do not rent a horror movie to watch some teeny booper have sex, I want to get the mess scared out of me. popcorn

In my opinion Psycho has to be the # 1 scariest movie. I still think about that shower scene sometimes when I am taking a shower.

The Exorcist is the scariest movie for me.   popcorn  I bought the version with added scenes and im watching it.... whistle  and the part with her coming down the stairs in a backbend with blood coming outta her mouth  happens and I let out this scream like ya wouldnt believe. I almost started crying. My kids were rolling with laughter.  In my defense I wasnt expecting it. Also, I have a thing about any kind of body contorting.  gives me the willies.

Evil Dead 2 was the end of my horror movie watching.  No other movie made me shake and sweat like that movie.  The closest I'll come now are suspense movies like "The Ring" or "The Grudge".

I watched the Exorcist at my sister's house when I was 7 on TV...she thought it would be funny to see me go screaming from the room.  I sat through the whole thing and slept through the night just fine...she looked at me strange from then on out laughing I wouldn't have given her the satisfaction so I never even mentioned it to Mom (who probably would have killed her!)!

This is one of the reasons I am so funny about who I let my kids go spend the night with!  I don't want them exposed to stuff I wouldn't let them watch here at home...and that stuff is off limits ~ period!!!  Ashelyn has nightmares about Caitlyn, I would hate to know what she would dream of if she saw the Exorcist error error

Yeah ~ our kids see so much stuff now...do you ever watch Ace of Cakes?  He did an Exorcist cake for Halloween ~ she was sitting on the bed and her head would spin round and green stuff would come out of her mouth...it was the coolest thing ever!!!  I would have loved to have seen it in person...the face was so close to Raven's face!  I loved it!

I honestly don't like the horror movies of today.  Everything is just shock-value now.  Old horror movies had mystery and left something to the imagination!

Usually when a movie is released to theatres it is also released on DVD.  Not always but most of the time.  Here in Ohio at least.  However, with that being said, my city and even some bigger surrounding cities will most likely NOT release it to theatres.  They're funny like that.  But I would bet the house that Blockbuster will have it on April 15th.  You excited too, Champagne?  laughing

And who doesn't love Ash?  laughing
