Just for info...for folks that have never signed up for the DONOTCALL list.

Are You Getting Telemarketing Calls You Don’t Want?
Here's How to Stop Them
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) launched the National Do Not Call Registry to give Americans a choice about getting telemarketing calls at home. According to a recent Harris Interactive poll,92 percent of people who reported placing a number on the registry said they are receiving fewer calls; a total of 78 percent said they’re getting “far fewer calls” or none at all.

If you think you put your number on the National Do Not Call Registry, and you’re still getting telemarketing sales calls, the Federal Trade Commission recommends that you:

Check to see that your number is on the registry. You can verify that your number is on the registry two ways: online at DONOTCALL.GOV (click on “Verify A Registration”), or by calling 1-888-382-1222 (TTY 1-866-290-4236) from the phone number you wish to verify. Follow the prompts.
You also can add your number to the registry using the same Web site or phone number (call from the number you want to register). If you register online, you will receive an email from donotcall.gov as part of the confirmation process. You will need to click on the link in this email within 72 hours after you receive it. If you don’t click on the link in the email, the number you tried to register will not be added to the registry, and telemarketers may continue to call.

Understand that some calls are not covered. Once your number has been on the registry for 31 days, most telemarketing calls will stop. However, you still may get:
calls from — or on behalf of — political organizations, charities, and telephone surveyors;
calls from companies with whom you have an existing business relationship. A company may call you for 18 months after you make a purchase or three months after you submit an inquiry or application;
calls from companies you’ve given permission to call.

File a complaint. If your number has been on the registry for at least 31 days, and a telemarketer calls, complain to the FTC. Visit DONOTCALL.GOV or call 1-888-382-1222 (TTY1-866-290-4236). You’ll need to provide the date of the call and the phone number or name of the company that called you.
The FTC works for the consumer to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices in the marketplace and to provide information to help consumers spot, stop, and avoid them. To file a complaint or to get free information on consumer issues, visit ftc.gov or call toll-free, 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357); TTY: 1-866-653-4261. The FTC enters consumer complaints into the Consumer Sentinel Network, a secure online database and investigative tool used by hundreds of civil and criminal law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and abroad.

Fortunately the "Do-Not-Call" list DOES WORK.

Being a sweeper opens you up to these marketing calls.  You need to read ALL of the rules for EVERY contest you enter.

Many of the more flakey "sponsors" will have a nice little fine print stating either "you give our varied sponsors of this promotion the right to contact you..." OR "... by entering this promotion you void any restrictions imposed by the "Do-Not-Call ...." OR "... winners will be contacted only by phone and by entering you give the sponsor that right to do so..."  OR "...we retain the right to contact you for the next 3 years regardless of your status on ..."

In other words:  You just opted yourself OUT of the list! and they will make sure that ALL of their "partners" receive your number!

"Caveat Emptor" as they say.

And the worst part is once you allow these "sponsors" to do this ... IT WILL NEVER END regardless of your status on the Registry now or in the future.  whistle  You "gave them permission" and all the yelling and filing of complaints in the world won't/can't make them stop.

Bummer, eh?

I read somewhere that you have to renew it after 5 years.  So if you did it 5 years ago (when it first came out), you'll have to do it again.  We started getting really random calls--mostly automated, and lots from police department supporters--and called again to get our names re-listed on the do not call list.

You should ALWAYS go to www.donotcall.gov and file a complaint if you get a telemarketer call and are on the do not call list.  The fine is $11,000 per call if they decide to go after the callers.  If enough people file complaints against the same company they WILL go after them.  The call I get most is the one to extend the warranty on my vehicle.  EVERY time they call the recording says " this is your last chance"  Crapola, that is what they said the last time they called.  And the number comes up something like 026-469-9756.  What the heck area code is 026???  Don't know how they get the fake numbers to show up on caller ID.  But I press 1 to be connected to a "person who can help me" and act interested.  That way I can get the company name even though the phone number is false.  Then I ask to be placed on their do not call list.  After I hang up I promptly go online and report them.  One time they asked the make and model of my vehicle (shouldnt they know that if they know the warranty is expiring??)  I said it was a 1972 Volkswagen bug (which I actually own and is now a dune buggy) and they hung up on me.  Imagine the rudeness  laughing  after all I told them the truth and THEY CALLED ME!!  Oh well ..... I try to have fun with the calls even though they DRIVE ME NUTS!!

The American Center for Law and Justice
http://www.aclj.org/

Is a tax exempt non profit, which means it is not covered by the Do Not Call Registry

http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/donotcall/

Do-Not-Call Registry

You can register your phone numbers for free, and they will remain on the list until you remove them or discontinue service – there is no need to re-register numbers.

The Do-Not-Call registry does not prevent all unwanted calls. It does not cover the following:

calls from organizations with which you have established a business relationship;

calls for which you have given prior written permission;

calls which are not commercial or do not include unsolicited advertisements;

calls by or on behalf of tax-exempt non-profit organizations.

So there is absolutely nothing to be done other than turn on Vice City and blow up some coffins!

You CAN ask non-profits etc to add you to their do not call list and they are supposed to do it.  Then if they don't you can start blowing up coffins.

Can I put those guys from the Albino Policeman's Breast Cancer Prevention and Blind Homeless Civil War Veteran's Fund in the caskets first? laughing
We get calls from all those shady non-profits.

Caskets are a great place for those annoying callers! I know everyone who has gotten one of those calls in the middle of dinner has wished a terrible fate on them at some time or the other!

She forgot to list political parties ... guess they made the law  LOL  go figure???

I had forgotten that the "American Center for Law and Justice" is an ultra right-wing organization ...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Center_for_Law_%26_Justice

Quote
The American Center for Law & Justice was founded in 1990 by evangelical Pat Robertson as a nonprofit public interest law firm. It was conceived as a counterweight to the American Civil Liberties Union, an organization which Robertson maintains is "hostile to traditional American values," though the two groups have worked together on some cases

... but in this case you just have to request that they take your number off their call list and they are required to do it.  But it still remains that you probably at some time gave them "reason" to add you to their list ????

Was it while you were out there blowing up caskets??????  Civil disobedience????  You shameless radical, you!!!

Many sites of this nature "harvest" your information off of online petition forms. Did you ever sign a petition that would come up if they sent a bot out looking for "abortion"? scratch

yeah and if you sign on of those ridiculous online petitions (note to all, they are totally ignored and NEVER considered as legit), many ask for your personal info. Don't give it.
