Yesterday the guy came to fill up our propane tank ~ 700 gallons...wellllllllll to make a long story short, this was a new guy and he really didn't know what he was doing and he didn't vent the tank properly.  When the pressure built up in the tank it popped the pop off valve completely off and we had propane shooting straight into the sky.  The brain surgeon then proceeds to hit the tank with a METAL HAMMER to try to get the pop off valve back on...see what I mean.  Needless to say, by the time it was done, 400 gallons of the 700 that he put in was back into the air around our house.  Thank God noone around here smokes.  There is a 2 inch deep ice ring on our tank right now...and our tank is sealed with two screw drivers whistle

We are going to have to pay for the damages to our tank...about $1000.00 it looks like cussing, but we own it.  We are not going to have to pay for the propane that they lost ~ thank God, and they are going to replace it in our tank when they fix it.  One of the things that makes me the maddest is that it is gonna kill all the leaves on my oak trees for the rest of the year.  Jimmie said that it sounded like bullets hitting them back there.  He stayed out back and sprayed off the tank with the water hose while it was going crazy.  I guess I'm lucky that any of us are alive sunny

Hi Ping,

Why in the world do YOU have to pay for the damages?  Shouldn't the brain surgeon that was filling it have to pay?  Ohhh, girl, I would be steaming mad.  They need to make it right for you!

How's the renovations going?  Kill anyone yet? laughing

That is what I was thinking...Jimmie thinks it is our baby since it was our tank.  I'm not really sure what to do...I don't want to mess up getting our propane there as they have the cheapest propane prices by almost a dollar a gallon.  I'm sorta between a rock and a hard place here...

EVERYTHING is going so S L O W...  we are finally done with Ashelyn's room and ready to do our room and the hallway this weekend.  Considering that we are only getting to work on things one weekend a month I guess things aren't going so badly. And Jimmie wonders how come I'm not motivated...

Still, times are tough, and businesses are suffering as well.  As a good customer, they should make it right and do whatever it takes to keep your business.  You didn't mess up, they did.  I can imagine how tough it is tho.  I've never used propane, but I've heard lately about how expensive it is.  Of course, my air conditioning bill is outrageous, so I can't really talk.  Over $500.00 a month in the Summer.  But this reneck gal is gonna be comfortable in the 100 degree heat.  laughing  I would rather go hungry than go without my air conditioner, and I Love to eat!

OMFG!  YOU guys have to pay for the damages the moron made?  I'd be calling that company, Ping Pong, and demanding that they take care of it and telling them what the Einstein did, and how he could have killed all of you!!  And for the record, I don't go complaining to companies like that at all.

We have a propane tank and I don't even like the kids hitting it with baseballs, footballs or even bumping it for that matter.  If I had seen this dumb grits hitting it with a hammer AND propane shooting out of the tank I would have beat his grits until he was unconscious!  Who the f&%$ does that?  And 400 gallons of propane is now seeping into your soil and air?!!  Oh F*&$ no!!

If you don't call and complain about the idiot at least call and demand they send a certified/competent/experienced gas guy to fix the damages.  We're getting ready to have our gas fireplace reconverted back to a regular fireplace and my biggest fear is that some half grits is gonna kill us all.

You are really lucky you DO STILL HAVE A HOUSE.  My grand daughters boyfriends parents had their propane tank filled last fall (perhaps by your brain surgeons brother).  He didn't pressure test it even though the law in Ohio says it is to be pressure tested if it hasn't been filled in over a year. (They used fire place and space heaters the winter before)  Well, the next morning when the dad got up for work he light a cig and the whole house (a double wide) exploded. All that was left was a few sticks and a hole in the ground.  Dad and g'daughters BF and the sister were blow clear outside, Mom fell to basement and Dad went back in to rescue her. All lived but Dad was severely burned etc.  Still waiting on the final decision by law as to if propane company was at fault (duh ???).  Thank God you were luckier!!!!!

popcorn Gosh, where are the video cameras when you need em?  I would certainly call the propane company and talk to them about this. At least to give your side of the story. Hard telling what the employee told them. Perhaps after speaking rationally to them they would at least offer to help pay for part of the repair if not all of it. They certainly must carry some liability insurance. You might also talk to your own home insurance agent.

Another thing to consider, if you don't report it, this incompetent is a deadly danger to the next customer.

The National Propane Gas Association may be helpful-find the rep in your area here:
http://www.npga.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=544
While this is a group for people who sell propane, it looks bad for the industry when a member kills a whole bunch of people in a dramatic way crazy tongue
Plus, they know all about the laws involved in this sort of thing

Ping, you should report this propane company to the Better Business Bureau at the very least.  And yes, I would request payment for the repair of the tank.  The idiot shouldn't be working for that company, as dangerous as he is.

Oh, and you have a 700 gallon propane tank?  Holy cow!  Mine is only 500 gallons, and that runs my house and one of my tenant's cabins.  And if I'd seen that whacko banging on the propane tank with a hammer, while propane was venting out the top...all you would have seen of me was elbows and artists, as I ran screaming down the street away from the house...LOL.

LMFAO!!  laughing  I guess that would be helluva lot better than trying to knock him out.

I still can't believe this guy.   I know nothing about propane, pressure testing, or venting the tank, but common sense tells me not to be banging on the tank with a freaking hammer!  It is very scary to know you all could have been blown up, Ping Pong!

You need to send them a registered letter explaining the whole sitaution, how THEIR EMPLOYEE was at fault and ask them how they will fix teh tank and give them a deadline.

Also, find out who the owner of the company is and send it to his name. If an employee balks at giving the owners name, askt ehm for a name to send a letter to.

Someting like this

Dear Mr Jones,
ON XXXX, your employee Fred, was filling our tank and did something that was both damaging and could have been dangerous.
Fred began to bang on the tank with a metal hammer to remove the valve. Obviously this was a dangerous situation and I believe that your employee should be trained better.

Secondly, he damage the tank. Since it was your employee who damaged our tank, we expect that your company will repair the tank.

I am asking that you call me within the next 7 days to discuss when your company will fix it. If not, I will have to contact a lawyer and also report the incident to the Utilites commission since your employee endangered my family.
 Since yours,
 Pissed off person.

If you have a friend who is a lawyer or have used a lawyer in the past, put "cc: Lawyers name" at teh bottom of the letter. Make sure you send it registered with signature required.

Trust me, a threat to the utilities commission sometimes gets the ball rolling

Nope ~ it is 1000 gallons...it is the biggest tank I have ever seen.

You crack me up sticks, but that was my thoughts exactly!

I am still talking to Jimmie about what to do, but he is still thinking that somehow we should have to pay.  Our tank is really really old with original hardware on it.  But I still go back to the fact that the hardware was functioning before brain surgeon got here...

sunny That's why I am suggesting that the cost be split. The hardware may be old but for the brain surgeon coming in and not venting the tank properly, it wouldn't have blown off.  Plus your chances of getting the company to help will be better if you only ask them to split it.

He did not vent the tank thus causing the chain of events.  The tank would of exploded or in your lucky case just equipment damaged.  Legally they have to make it whole but not profit you.  That means they need to pay for clean up, any damage to trees or property and part of the replacement or repair of the item.  Ask yourself what needs repairing and how old was it, was it in need of replacement or repair.  You might as well take the $1000 and get a safe new one, lol.

Goes to look for Propane tank sweepstakes.
