Freud described two varieties of humor: non-tendentious and tendentious. Non-tendentious humor includes "innocent" jokes that involve word play, substitution, absurdity, and the like. In contrast, tendentious humor has a particular aim, usually sexual or hostile. Sexual jokes may be used to test the waters with potential sex partners. They may be used to express repressed desires. Or, they may be used in a hostile manner. "By making our enemy small, inferior, despicable or comic, we achieve in a roundabout way the enjoyment of overcoming him- to which the third person, who has made no efforts, bears witness by his laughter" (p. 103). Thus, hostile jokes may be used simultaneously to attack one person or group while affiliating with another person or group. In this manner, the audience becomes an essential component of tendentious humor. By laughing, the audience affirms the point of view expressed in the joke. Obscene jokes can reinforce the norms of a group (Fine, 1976). Hostile humor can be used to reject and exclude people (Hertzler, 1970). Sexist humor can be "a token of camaraderie among coworkers" (Pryor, 1995a, p. 160) or it may reflect a discourse of power and an expression of patriarchy (Richlin, 1992). Humor can be used to express power and dominance in a group (Coser, 1960). Finally, sexual teasing, jokes, and remarks are the most common form of sexual harassment (Pryor, 1995a, 1995b).

With some members here, like me, inthesticks, loren_brothers, ll1, JZ,assume humor unless we start a lunatic rant in Gripe! From what I have read from all you nutcases. No one intends to be mean in what they write. You use sarcasm, satire, cranky butt, puns... bad puns, but funny none the less. Now, as for making fun of Wolfie and her chocolate! So not funny!  If you feel someone is being offensive, here's a novel idea! Try a pm asking them why they said what they did. Tell them what part of what they wrote made you uncomfortable. Seriously, you may be surprised at how wrong you have taken something, or maybe they will be a little more sensitive. I know I am sarcastic. I will make fun of people because they seem to "get me". People do the same back to me. I would hate to think I made someone uncomfortable, thinking they "got" me when in fact they took what I said to heart (except for ll1). I'd rather have a pm converstation with someone and get to know them and realize the whole thing was a mistake rather than take it personally. Really, try it. You might find it fun to laugh at yourself a little too! Just some random thoughts not anything specific. Well, ok, ll1 has been dogging me for calling him ancient and a relic in his birthday thread, but, I didn't tell him to put down his age as older than mud!  You know, I have made some good friends here over a simple misunderstanding. That's part of the intent of this thread. To get us to talk about things. OK, I am sarcastic. It's who I am. Don't take offense at something I say. Usually, I intend to make you laugh. I never intend to hurt your feelings. |
