When I was young I remember my dad not letting me try out or do activities because he said " you will only quit and I am not wasting my money!"

Well, yes I did quit some things that I found were not for me.  But, I was a kid searching.

So, as my kids were growing up...I supported them with anything they wanted to try. We were in no way rich...in fact went in the hole letting the kids do what they wanted.  But, my two oldest who are on their own are doing what they found they liked best.

My son....who has done almost everything also, played baseball since t-ball and was really good.  He was called up to Varsity in his freshman year. So...in his Jr. year when he came to tell us that he has decided to quit baseball and join track....we were just shocked!  All that money..camps...hotel rooms, traveling....etc. and gives it up for something he has never done before?  We hesitate, then he says "I am not quitting baseball to loose".  So we let him.

He has flipped everyone out with what he has done. Who knew? He set records in the 400 and won State Championship in the mile.
Our jaws along with coaches and the newspapers were hitting the floor and the colleges are pounding down the door.

When kids want to try...let them...if it does not work out, its ok, let them try something else.  Otherwise you might miss their true talents.

Here is some videos of him running.  The guy he beat in the mile, that came in second....was a shoe in for the win and had set a national record for the mile at another event...

I thought track was boring...well Cross country is really boring...but these films were pretty exciting.  Maybe cause I am just a mom. Let them spread their wings and they will fly!

PS...He is the one with blonde hair...in the mile he is pacing with a team mate in front. But, he come in first...barely!

OK, so I'm sitting at my computer, by the second lap, (second youtube link) yelling, "Go Mason!!" and I don't even know you guys! By the third and fourth laps, I'm holding on to the edge of my computer chair, "C'mon Mason!!" He was so far ahead all along, it is just amazing.

Your post was wonderful and full of positive energy. What great parenting support, understanding and flexibility. You must be proud of your children, and they of you.

Colleges pounding on your door...bet the girls will be right behind them. :smt002

Congrats to you and Mason, and thanks for posting. It was great fun to watch. Best to you.

It was intense.

But, I would like to add the sportmanship between the parents and the kids is sooo different! They all, even from the other side of the state are getting to know each other by talking on line and planning on meeting up to do races together.

You don't usually find that, other kids and other teams supporting each other and parents just so happy for you if your kid does well, even though their kid didn't.

The kids are great examples of what sportmanship is all about, and you really have to give credit to them....they all are so wonderful...and on any other day...could probably beat the other! And that is ok with them!

Thanks...too bad kids are kids and keep us questioning ourselves on whether or not we are good parents!!! Just at that age.....where the world revolves around them...and it can be real tough and challenging sometimes.

Especially when to be a part of sports...parents need to have money. Here...Most the kids that particitate in sports..are much more well off then us. And when your child has friends with cell phones..cars..money for the trips to these meets that are in other states...etc. It is hard for our son to know when we have to draw the line.

But...we cherish these wonderful articles, videos,  memories  the most...but, I do have stuff on tape for blackmail later, just in case!!
