Okay, so when it comes to the dentist, I'm a big crybaby!  cry  I've had a broken tooth for almost 2 years, it's broken right down to the gum line.  The past 4 or so days it's been hurting like crazy.  Today after much fear and weepiness, I gave in to the pain and called a dentist.  Of course he can't get me in until Friday - My Birthday!  crazy tongue  I hope he can just pull it because I'm going away a week from Friday and I want to have a good time without being all swollen and bruised. *Sigh*

Dee, call him back and tell him it is an emergency.  They will usually slip you in.  You probably need some antibiotics too.  See if they will phone in a prescription to your dentist.  It will probably help with the pain.  Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks, Wolfie!  I woke up this morning and my jaw was swollen.  I went online and they have a section where you can send the doctor a question via email.  I did, plus I'm going to call them when they open this morning.

I hope you don't need an oral surgeon. I had a similar problem and the Dentist would not pull it because the broken tooth #14 had 3 roots and one going right through the sinus area. They gave me a shot and put me to sleep and I woke up without the tooth.  Smile

Bad teeth can cause all types of problems. I can't stand the dentist either. I think they like to make pain.  scratch

You might need to call the dentist back and let him know how long your tooth has been broken and that it is to the gum line.  Don't you remember that young boy that died of a brain infection because of a tooth.  That REALLY isn't the way I want to go.  I had an impacted wisdon tooth to deal with  a while back and I swear I think labor pains weren't as bad.   cussing  Make sure you leave that dentist office with something for pain.  They have gotten to be little wussies when it comes to prescriptions.  It's 2007, we should not have to put up with pain because of dental issues!!!!!!!!! cussing

I also had to go to an oral surgeon a few weeks ago!!  Mine was a wisdom tooth that had broken months ago and ran right on a nerve.  Now my oral surgeon gave me 25 loratab.  The dentist only gave me 12 tylenol 3 thinking that it was going to be three weeks before I went to the surgeon  cry  I will NOT go to the dentist unless I am in terrible pain so I do understand!!

On things about teeth, my BIL got a heart valve infection that almost killed him.  They told him that flossing his teeth caused the infection.  They told him that the germs that he flossed out settled in his heart valve and caused it.  They told him that he probably only had about a week to live when he went in!!  He had to have all of his teeth cut out before they would do the surgery.

One weird thing about his new heart valve, it is plastic or something, and when he dies they will have to turn it off ~ it will just keep on beating!  I just thought that was strange!

Update!  I called the dentist this morning and he told me to come right in.  He was the absolute nicest person I've ever met (along with his Dad who is his receptionist/office manager).  He gave me 4 shots of novocaine and I swear I didn't even feel them!  Then he sawed the tooth in half and took (yanked) it out in 2 pieces.  I am completely numb as I type this.  I am a little worried about the pain after the novocaine wears off, but he didn't give me any pain meds, so I'll be downing Tylenol later, I'm sure.

I had heard about the little boy that died, trust me, that kept running through my mind.

Thanks for all the support, you people are the absolute best!  cheers

I had a pair of pliers, a length of twine, a doorknob, a fifth of tequila, and some gauze bandages all packaged up ready to send to you.  I guess you wont be needing them now!   crazy tongue   Bummer!

Waving  I want Tequilla too!   headbang

Dee, when I had my tooth pulled, I filled the pain meds and never used them.  There was no discomfort after at all. Although, there could have been, but compared to what it felt like before, there was no pain.  Seriously, I wouldn't anticipate too much discomfort.  My dentist said he gave them to me just in case, but that most people don't use them.

Hope you have a pain free recovery.  Glad you were able to get it taken care of.

...when I had my tooth pulled, ...

Wolfie.... they didn't pull one of your fangs did they??????  A wolf with no fangs isn't very convincing!

But, I have to agree with the Wolf'ster:  After they come out the pain differential makes you feel absolutely nothing!  I actually have pulled 2 of my own teeth myself ....... have fake chompers now!  crazy tongue ......  THINK what kinda PAIN you'd have to be in to do THAT!!!!!!  OOOOH......but sweet relief!   laughing  Pain is gone, tooth is gone, tequila is gone, and chewing steak is never the same!

PS: the string method is best...pliers dont work!  error

Well, the novocaine wore off about 2:30 or 3pm today, I started to get a bit of a headache.  I took 2 Tylenol, got an ice pack and laid down.  The doctor called to see how I was and told me to just keep downing the Tylenol every 4 hours.  I have to say, the pain has been about the same as when the tooth was hurting, so I was able to deal with that for the last few days, I can deal with this.  Besides, this will start going away, I'm assuming tomorrow will just keep getting better.  This has been a much more pleasant experience than when I had my wisdoms removed.

I was thinking about getting a tattoo for my b-day, but I've been hesitant of the pain.  Now I know that since this tooth pain, I can handle a tattoo needle!

No, Loren, I still have my fangs!  My husband would say my bite is way worse than my bark, but that's a story for another day!   laughing

Dee, I am sorry you are still having some discomfort.  I hope you feel better tomorrow.

Too late now, but if any of you ever have a toothache, try DENTS gum - it's in a little blue box & I found it at Walgreens.

That stuff is AMAZING!!! You take a little piece and roll it into a ball and put it over the exposed part of the tooth & it stops hurting really fast!!!  headbang
