Ever stop to think, and forget to start again?

« on: February 18, 2008, 03:53:25 PM »

cheers I was able to reach my goal of losing weight so I decided to try to quit smoking. Having smoked for over 30 years, I knew that this would take some planning. So I planned for it. February 1st was my day to quit. I got all my items lined up and prepared for my big day, nicotine patches and gum, vegetable snacks as I don't want to put pounds back on, and some herbal supplements to keep me from getting crabby. (Those of you who do smoke know exactly what I am talking about, nonsmokers have no idea how tough this process is)  It was all planned and I stuck with my plan. My dh isn't ready to quit but luckily we quit smoking in our house a few years ago so at least I don't have to smell it in the house.
Today is day 18!!!  I can report that I am doing fine. When I get the urge or feel tempted I get on my stationary bike and peddle. If I'm sitting here I take 3 deep breaths and breath out slowly along with lots of water.
Anyone who is thinking that they also want to quit and need support, please don't hesitate to ask.

My roommate quite smoking years ago-then about a year after he quit the neuro made him smoke a whole pack the night he was getting ready for his sleep deprived EEG. He got sooooo sick. He said that experience finally put him off tobacco for life.
I've never smoked so haven't a clue.

cheers  Congrats are in order for you. That is probably 1 of the hardest things you will ever do.  I stopped smoking 7 months ago after 35 yrs.  It was not easy & it is still hard.  I can smell someone smoking a mile away ha ha ha at least that is what it seems.  Get a urge everytime I see someone with a cig just have to walk away quickly, hope that part goes away soon.  The best of luck to you. know you can do it  "One Day at a Time".

 cheers Today is day 33!
I had a doctor's appointment today and she was thrilled to hear that I had quit. She said my heart and lungs are sounding good! I know I'm not missing that coughing in the middle of the night or in the morning. Life is good!

My dad quit smoking back in '89 - it was a heart attack that prompted him to do it.  How wise you are to take control of your health!  Congrats and best wishes on your continued success with weight loss and healthy lungs.  Go Pmeek!

blob  Today marks 6 weeks!!! Life is good, but I have to admit  I haven't done well with my eating habits. I guess I will just have to start working on that again. It will be easier as the weather gets better and I can get outside more.
Now if I could just get the price of gasoline to go down! It's been holding steady here for the last week at 3.49 for regular unleaded.

Congratulations!  That is such a hard thing to do!  I will admit quitting smoking was one of the hardest thing I have ever done...I still have cravings and I quit 6 years ago.  One of the ways I tried to combat the craving for either a cigarette or donut  nono was to drop down and do 10 push-ups when I felt that way.  Chewing gum also helped because it was sweet.  Good luck with everything and just remember that it's OK to slip up once in a while...you didn't gain these habits all in one day so it's hard to justify that you'll lose them all in one day...just keep working at it, and you WILL get there!!  Congratulations again!!

UGH!  Where do I start? LOL

Pam, I can't tell you how much I envy you nor how proud I am of you and I don't even know you!  Any smoker knows how hard it is to quit and fight the cravings one will get.  I can't imagine what crackheads go through but then again if it's anything like cigs I can!  laughing

I've quit 6 times since New Year's.  It wasn't a resolution, I just thought I had had my fill, until I figured differently.  Smoking is like an old friend who you love and always want to be around.  It's mind-boggling how one can depend on something so much that has the potential to kill you.

I'm a beer drinker and a coffee drinker.  Like anyone who drinks and smokes, you know you feel like you can't have a drink without a cig.  Or one who liks that cig first thing in the morning or after a meal.  I know it takes one to actually change up one's routine to successfully quit but I feel like I can't.  I want that cig when I'm drinking coffee or when I'm having a beer.  I want that cig right after a meal or snack.

My neigbor quit 6 years ago.  She said she even changed her route to work because she'd get to a certain point and it was habit that she lit up.  She said to stock up on Jolly Ranchers and anything crunchy or low-fat to occupy your mouth.  She gave up coffee and wine because those were huge triggers.

For me, it feels like I'm coming out of my skin after 4 days.  I'm so darn irritable I can't stand myself and I feel like I'm functioning on fumes.  Depressed, unmotivated, sad, in mourning to name a few emotions.  I've been smoking out of my back door for 4 months now so I thought I'd take it a step further and only smoke outside.  I'm outside so much I ain't getting anything done LOL

I know it isn't my time to quit.  I know I have to really want it and I just don't.  I don't want to die from it but I don't want to give it up.  I've been wondering what my breaking point will be.  The one thing that will effect me enough to just stop.  I've even gone as far as to look at pics I've googled on what lung cancer looks like.  Lung cancer and mouth cancer.  It just doesn't seem to be enough.

What was your breaking point?  What was the one thing that made you put them down for good no matter how much you wanted to pick them back up?

sunny Completelyme, My breaking point was having my mom die suddenly from heart failure. I went to the doctors a few months after that after not going for many years. I was just starting to get high blood pressure. As of January of this year here in Oregon they can only sell fire safe cigarettes. My husband noticed it first, the salty taste from smoking. I went online to discover that in order to make them firesafe, they use a solution on the papers that contains sodium. So as if the smoking isn't bad enough for you and high blood pressure, the sodium in the papers only makes it worse. Something I am sure most of the smokers here don't even realize. The firesafe will soon be the only kind available everywhere. Not to mention the high cost of smoking. I have saved alot in just this short time. The extra money has beeen great especially with the price of gas going up and up.(It was at $3.57 here today for regular!) Don't give up trying. Everyday is a new opportunity to quit.
