This wont matter to anyone but me but I just needed to write about it....our middle son who has always struggled to find his place in the world (hes on the chunky side and doesnt particularly like "boy things" ie Sports) has finally found his niche in the world of acting...last year we signed him up for acting classes at a local dinner theater company here in town and he LOVED it and was actually quite good at it (Im sure thats the mother in me talking a little bit...lol) Anyway, we signed him up for it again this year (its a summer camp and kind of costly..$375) and he was really looking forward to it....took him to his first day of class this morning, only to be greeted by a sign on the door that says the dinner theater and all its summer classes are closing due to insufficient funds and no refunds will be given...The money is obviously a big deal, but even more is my sons disappointment in finding something he loved and the coward that owns the place didnt even have the common decency to call me or any of the other parents to let us know what was happening..we just had to drive down there (and thanks for THAT by the way with the gas prices as they are cussing) only to be met by a piece of paper.....my son was beside himself and as a mother, you hate when a child hurts and theres nothing you can do.....no other acting opportunities for kids in our town.....Luckily I put the cost of the classes on my credit card and have filed a dispute before this dingdong files for bankruptcy so I might end up getting my money back...but I just feel so sad for my son and just needed to vent about it.  I honestly dont know how this guy lives with himself, knowing that he has done this to people.
Thanks for listening  Waving

what? That's not right. how can they keep the money. That's stealing. I would be livid.  I would definitely dispute the charge.

Im sorry you son is upset. Its one thing to do something like this to an adult. But to a kid. I hope you can find a similar program somewhere for him.

What town, state do you live in? Is there a community college nearby? How about churches? How old is your son? How about high schools - sometimes they give classes (not for credit, and sometimes in the summer)?

Look up something like "child actors" (your town, state) on the internet. I know in Austin, Texas there are a lot of acting classes.

But don't give up! Your son likes/loves acting - maybe he could put on a play for you and the family, extended family. There are plays at the library, even 1 person plays - like "Mark Twain Tonight," acted by one person (Hal Holbrook).

I'm pulling for you and your son headbang

My suggestion is to call the local tv station that has some kind of "Action" reporter. YOu know the kind.. they go and show up with a camera and ask why someone is a jerk and stole money.

If they filed for bankruptcy, it's one thing. But for them to just put up a notice like that is illegal in most states. I would also go to the cops and file for legal charges against the company. It's worth a shot

There might not be kid-specific opportunities for acting, but are there any other theater groups in the area?  If there aren't any kid roles at the moment, there are plenty of things a kid can do to participate backstage.  Sets, lighting, make-up, costumes, props, etc...  Most amateur theater groups would be happy to welcome an enthusiastic young person into the group.  For what it's worth, my dad does a lot of Gilbert & Sullivan local productions and he's always delighted when kids want to play too.  It doesn't seem like it now, but this could turn out to be blessing in disguise.  If the jerk running the dinner theater would disappoint kids like that and cheat parents, he's not the right mentor for your son anyway.  There are better opportunities out there.
