I am no dummy about these things usually. But got an email about a win on Webstakes. I know they went MIA several months back, But a curious email tells me i won in the 2nd quarter of 2008 ...of a $400 Circuit City card. Ok CC went out of business but someone else bought their name and relaunched. They (webstakes??) of course want me to fill out a W-9. That of course shares personal info including SS #. Also  Seems to me you get an affadavit sent to you by Fed x or uPS and its under $600 so i wonder about that too. Anyone care to chime in?...also the name on the Webstakes email is...sara lee lol

Is the email return address ...@webstakes.com?  Can you email her back to ask why you need to fill out the W9 when it is under $600?  I would try to get a response before I mailed anything w/my ss# on it.  Can she give you a phone # to call? Why are they waiting this late to notify you?  Let us know how it turns out.

Well here is whats up. There was a fax and a phone number. I googled the fax number and it brought up a match to NBC universal. NBC universal owns Oxygen network and ivillage, I THINK but not sure that ivillage owned or bought webstakes, So that somewhat adds credibility to it.

Called the number and someone answered as NBC. Then asked for the Sara Lee name. No match said the operator, Then asked for the name of a man where the fax was supposed to be to the attention of, I got a match, Operator connected me and i got voice mail. Left a message friday afternoon, No reply yet. Replied directly to the email to "sara lee" shortly after, No response yet. Sent another email to webstakes (email address had a webstakes.com domain) no reply yet.   The email to "sara lee is an nbcuni.com domain.

Why so late in notification makes me think that maybe because i won before webstakes went under(or simply suspended sweeps)  That they are making good on it after ivillage came in and took them this long to get solvent. But im not taking any chances until i get clear answers.

I mean somethings add up..and just enough things dont to make me apprehensive

Sometimes, you do get a W-9 form to fill out instead of an affidavit.  Also, the IRS only mandates prizes of $600.00+ be reported by the sponsor.  However, the sponsor can also submit 1099's on prizes smaller than that since all prizes are reportable as "Other Income".

I don't think its bad to be cautious, but I've received 1099 forms for items that were only $60. I've also gotten winning notifications from contests that ended up to six months prior. Its always good to be on the safe side, but I wouldn't base things on the ARV and length of time it took them to notify you. Hope it turns out to be the real thing!  sunny

I won the Domino Sugar Napa Valley Sweetest getaway sweepstakes.  It ended October 31,2008 and did not get the notification until February 19,2009.  It was legitimate because we already took the trip and it was amazing.

I never got any calls back from NBC universal ,But called again and spoke with the man who`s name was to the attention of for the fax of the affidavit and SS#. Told me i could email him the info directly, I said  its ok i`ll fax it, then after i decided to email, i called back, got voicemail, no call back yet. Try again this afternoon. The phone i call is listed at NBC universal and i do get an answer of NBC universal, Oxygen and ivillage network when i do call. Easing my mind a little.

Email was answered by "Sara Lee" and the reason for delay was maternity leave for those who do the notifications. Not worried much about delay in notification..In fact if someone was scamming me, why would they say Q2 of 2008? They would at least try and make it more believable to get me to bite, That Q2 2008 only adds suspicion lol..Just worried about SS#
