The meter reader came yesterday. Mom has several humming bird feeders hanging near the meter. We have a couple of dozen humming birds. The guy got out of his truck, spotted the birds and stood there, open mouthed. One of the hummers flew up and chittered at him, as they are wont to do when anyone gets into their "feeder space". He backed up,then got back in the truck. A little later he climbed back out wearing a heavy jacket, clear plastic eye shields and a hard hat. He then carefully moved along the side of the house, keeping as far away from the feeders as possible, until he could read the meter.

I would have loved to have seen that. Next time have your video camera ready. That video would probably win a big cach prize on America's Funniest Home Videos or some other contest.

My grandmother had her feeder right outside the kitchen window - I loved to watch the birds!!! And except for trying to say a nesting that fallen out of the nest and being dive bombed by momma bird when I was 6 or so, I've always got along with them. Myabe he was dive bombed too as a child and now has a freak out from it? Poor guy. But I bet is was kinda funny to watch him prepared for mayhem from such interesting and territorial birds!!!

That's pretty funny. I could imagine him being nervous. The first time I saw a hummingbird I freaked out. I was in Kansas visiting a friend and I'd never seen a bird move like that. I had no idea if it was a big bug or a tiny UFO! After seeing them a couple of times I came to appreciate them. I wish we had them here in Colorado where I live, instead of those pesky woodpeckers who like trying to drill into the rain gutters or chimney caps at 6 in the morning!

There isn't any hummingbirds native to Colorado??? We only have the Ruby Red Throat hummingbirds here, but when Momma went to Texas to see my nephew in the Air Force she got to see several different kinds. I think she was almost ready to move There was a good 200 at a time down at her house before she passed away. She had up like 15-20 feeders at a time and would have to fill them twice a day ~ it was a bit much. Needless to say, I am sure the little fellas are missing her! There isn't a single feeder up now!

200? I think she would've gotten free power...

I'm sure there are some in Colorado but not where I am. I've never seen one. We get all kinds of others from hawks to big old owls (the cats hide under anything they can find when owls show up!), but not a single hummingbird.

200? I think she would've gotten free power... I swear it! We would have like 7 or 8 at a single feeder at a time and then other ones chasing each other around. It was crazy down there When it was getting ready to rain you didn't want to walk out the door ~ they went nuts. Momma would have rather seen the hummingbirds than her Grandkids

That is too funny and if they cannot read your meter usually they guess. Now if that would work on people coming to the door then I would get a bunch of feeders, lol.

See you in NH in 2009. Has it been 5 years or more? Thanks for the memories and farewell dearest friends. Mom needs me more than sweeping. I will miss you all.
