Don't go into a battle of the brains unarmed...

« on: July 13, 2008, 05:33:42 PM »

I know I said I wasn't ready for another dog...and really I wasn't, but Jimmie came in from work Friday morning and said that he thought that we were going to have to get another dog soon.  We are having deer coming up in the garden and no amount of 'home remedies' that we try have worked.  He asked me if I wanted to go with him to pick out another dog from the humane society.  I told him nope cry  I didn't want anything to do with another dog...

Well, about 2 hours later Ashelyn calls me and tells me to meet them outside.  I go outside and in the back of the truck was Buster.  I'm not really sure what Buster is ~lol~ but I have to say that he already has my heart...they told Jimmie that he was gonna be put down tomorrow and that they thought that he had been hit by a car.  Jimmie and the girls tried to get him to come to the front of the cage but it was like he just didn't think he had a shot ~ he wouldn't even lift his head up.  Jimmie finally went in and started petting him and he perked up a little, but just a little.  They told Jimmie that they thought he was probably 3 years old, but we think he may be a little older.

He is already holding up his paw for us to shake also!  He is also playing with our cats ~ lol!  After Scamper, I didn't think that would ever be possible!  Scamper would have eaten them for lunch!  He is such a sweet dog though.  We have his appointment to have him fixed.

I know people like 'fancy' pets, but if you have room at your house for any animal, think about going to the humane society and adopting one!  There are SO many...Jimmie said there was a full blooded great dane there as well!  You just never know what you will find, and you are saving a life.  These poor places are so full that they just can't keep every one of the pets that come in...while they were up there the other day, two bunches of puppies came in!  The lady that ran the place couldn't believe that we weren't taking a puppy.  Older animals don't stand much of a shot up against the cute little cuddlies!!

I have to say that my heart is still broken over Scamper, but I really do like this dog!  He is going to be a good dog.  His story makes it hard for me not to like him all that much more...I'm such a sap laughing

Great Dane? I forgot where you are but there are multiple Great Dane rescue groups who will help get the big guy adopted. Here is one
http://www.greatdanerescueinc.com/
Somebody dumped a Great Dane at the pound here, and the state rescue group arranged for him to be transported to DC for a new home. Those big dog people are a dedicated bunch! If you could email them, before he or she gets PTS, that would be good! sunny
And congratulations on your new dog! That is a wonderful thing to do love

Thanks Red, I contacted them and told them about the Great Dane.  I gave them all of the humane society info so they can get in touch with them!  We are a little out of there normal area, but maybe they will be able to make an exception...I hope so anyway, Jimmie said it is a really pretty dog!

I love unfancy dogs  love  My first and only dog was a mutt I named Rambo  love  Years ago when Rambo was hit and fatally injured by a car, our father replaced him with another dog and I never really took to Rocky(I loved Sly Stallone as a kid  laughing).  Rocky was my brother's dog up until Rocky died a couple years back.  He was a pure bred Australian Shepherd.

I'm so glad you guys rescued that unfancy dog, Ping Pong  love  Such a sweet ending for Buster instead of a horrible one.  He won't replace Scamper but he'll make his own mark on your heart  love

We took Buster to the vet yesterday to have his check-up.  Well, Buster has heartworms.  The vet gave us a couple of options

1 ~ Take Buster back to the pound and get another dog (nope!)

2 ~ Do nothing and let Buster live (and suffer) with heartworms (nope!)

3 ~ Treat Buster and hope for the very best outcome (that is our pick!)

It is gonna cost us almost $400.00 to treat Buster for heartworms, but he is worth it.  He is such a sweetheart of a dog and has been through such a hard time.  I hate that he is gonna have to spend three nights away from us, and then spend a couple of months of limited activity, but I have to do what is best for my new baby!!  Say a puppy prayer for Buster, he is younger so hopefully things will go well, but it can be risky for dogs.

Aww!  I hope Buster comes through with flying colors.  I have heard that younger dogs take better to the treatment than older dogs.

I'm glad the vet is doing everything properly and keeping him for the first three days. Its important to keep them comfortable during the first stages of the treatment. I hope everything goes well!

cry  Oh my! Poor Buster. So lucky that you took him to the vet when you did. So glad you decided to keep and treat Buster. He needs a good home like yours.

Awww...ping, congratulations!  Good for you!!!  You're making the right choice - that dog deserves another chance.

We also just picked up a puppy from a rescue shelter.  Apparently they had rescued her from a breeder who found she had too many puppies on her hands that she couldn't sell so she decided she could not afford to feed them.  Fortunately, instead of letting them starve, she called the rescue.  Our puppy is very thin, but is now eating everything in sight, and is happy to have four people around her that love her very much.

Good luck with Buster!  He sounds like a trooper, and thanks to you - he now has a fighting chance!!  Hope you win lots sweeping so you can pamper him silly!

Thanks Sweepy time, we brought him home today.  He is tired but seems to be recovering well!  Hopefully the worst of it is over with, at least until we have to have him fixed!  He is such a good dog though ~ he will be pampered silly here!

Much luck and love with your puppy as well ~ they sure are special when you know that you have saved them from bad conditions!!
