Many states appear to be in recession
    (AP)

AP - The finances of many states have deteriorated so badly that they appear to be in a recession, regardless of whether that's true for the nation as a whole, a survey of all 50 state fiscal directors concludes.

Surprisingly, Arkansas is doing quite well...all things considered.  For the past three years now, the state has had a budget surplus with this year being no exception.  In fact, a near $1 billion dollar budget surplus occured last year alone.  A vast underground deposit of natural gas, called the Fayetteville Shale (which spread out across most of north central Arkansas), has drawn in many natural gas drilling companies...all of whom have approached land owners for drilling access, providing landowners with rental money for the land being used and for mineral rights found under the land. My parents have 250 acres and are allowing one gas drilling company to drill for gas, while my parents eventually cash-in on the mineral rights.

Towns all around this Fayetteville Shale area are beginning to boom...as workers are coming in, renting apartments and homes, etc.  The HP company has recently announced they will build a new IT center in Conway (near my home), which will employ 1,500 workers, who will earn about $50K a year in incomes.

Houston is doing well right now. The housing market is still ok and gas prices are down also. I have noticed some things going up in the grocery stores like milk and dairy but really I havn't changed my lifestyle yet. That could change but for now we are alright here.

THAT IS DOWNRIGHT FUNNY!  I luv your comment.

(I thought we were in recession last year or was it the year before?  Don't you mean we are in a state of Depression?)  Okay, you are correct!  They finally have come to the realization and declared it though.  What I can't understand is almost every state is millions and billions of dollars in debt and the government didn't clearly have a group of people to oversee that each state "go forward" and not in debt.

I think the government doesn't have a clear path in what to do with the "fuel" "unemployment" "foreclosure" "automotive sector - outsourcing" and "going green"  concerns.

How about fixing all of the concerns all at once......
Rather than the government handing out billions of dollars for stimulus checks and to fannie mae, freddie mack (housing), automotive industries (billions in bankruptcy), change laws on outsourcing, tighten laws on housing guidelines (no balloon mortgages - or small print), etc.

The UNITED STATES could become the Worlds Largest Hybrid Automotive industry by simply making Hybrids affordable (scale the vechiles down and bring the costs down under $12,000).   Everyone would want a Hybrid!   It would then put people back to work, better for our environment, solve fuel issues, solve some foreclosure issues, unemployment would go down, etc!!!!

The government is discussing drilling for oil off shore, using coal as a source of fuel, using ethonal / biofuels (corn)................ the process of doing this creates a very negative effect on our environment.     If you look at the Olympics coming up - the runners will be wearing masks because of the pollution - ultimately causes Asthma or other breathing problems!     China, India and other countries are beginning to buy more vechicles etc.....   this will lead to more pollution.    WE MUST begin to go GREEN soon because there isn't a way to trace back all the chemicals being pumped into our air - no joke.   The government needs to seriously identify with the prospect of HYBRIDS or implement a program that will put us back on the map in the automotive sector or we may be looking at a brim future.

Well, that's my two cents!   he he
