Google Alerts Walk Through??

I've heard people say this has helped them figure out if they won a contest or sweep.. is there a walk through on how to set this up & how to use the keywords?? Or how it's used in general.. trying to figure it out right now..
 
I have mine set up with my name, whenever it happens. Set up multiple alerts by adding you last name and city or any combination that you like. Just make your choices from the dropdown menu after entering the search words and click Creat Alert. Be sure to include the email address you want the alert to go to.
 
figured it was simple, I just used a differnt combinations & hopefully it will work, My name, city, Nick Name, Email, Winner & so on & so on...
