Holiday tipping

Amanda, my mail carrier, brings my prizes and unwanted catalogs without complaint. I thought I'd tip her a $15 iTunes card. What do you give service people?

A christmas card with a 5-10 starbucks card inside usually. It depends on who it is. The mailman is only get 5.00 this year. The fed ex guy is getting 10.00

Actually the mail carrier here is not that great so she doesn't get anything from me. My mail goes to all my neighbors houses and I get their mail. It's a mess and I don't really care for her at all.

Now the mail lady that I give my packages and stuff to mail for me gets treated really well but then again that's because she is my MIL! :sunny:

It's kinda funny that this came up on our forum because we were talking about it just the other night at dinner with friends. My best friend made a statement "why should we tip them for simply doing their jobs" She is a pilot for a major airlines and she said she never got a tip for simply doing what was expected of her and didn't expect to. Good point I suppose. I always bake cookies but I think now days people just chunk homemade goodies in the garbage. You can't even hand out homeade items within our school system so I guess I'll need to think on it some more this year

Sounds a lot like my carrier

I've never heard of tipping your mail carrier, ups, etc. But since we are on this topic.
Delivery drivers like Papa Johns, pizza hut, whoever. Tip them!!! My husband works for Papa Johns, and tipping is how we get grocerys, etc. He gets paid $6.50 an hour plus tips/gas. The worst thing you can do is not give the pizza man a tip. Even if its just $1 or so, it adds up. My husband gets so upset when people don't tip. And its not that he is doing a bad job, its just some of the customers are jerks. LIke this one guy, Gave him money over what it was sopposed to cost. And my husband said, Do you want change, or is this for the tip. The guy laughed and was like, Im not giving tips.

I think my mail carrier holds my packages. I find it funny that I wont get anything for awhile and then in one day I will have a ton of stuff. I will open my front door and there is three, four packages. all on the same day. every time. I dont think so.

oh and tiff. I always tip the delivery people very, very well. They love to come to my house. With gas the way it is its only right to tip them alot.

LOL! Last year I got my freaky mail guy a $25 gift card from our local grocery, but made my husband give it to him. (If you have read my prior posts on the mailman, you know I'm kinda scared of him). He saw my husband 7 or 8 times after that and never thanked him. Finally I opened the door for him and he thanked me. Weird.

I just started sweeping this year, so giving the mail carrier one of the "wins" this time is a great idea...thanks, Sweepyhead!

I have two mail carriers. the primary carrier is a female (whom I don't like too well), and the substitute is a man. I also subscribe to two different newspapers, so there are two carriers. The female and the two paper carriers will each receive, from me, a $20 gas card, a single electric coffee cup warmer, and a pkg. of gourmet coffee. That comes out to about $36 for each present.

I pondered what to do for the male carrier, as he is the one I really like. However, he's only a substitute route carrier, and I do feel obligated to give any gifts to her.

Give your neighbors the gifts!! I hate having to track down my mail ~ I have lived here for over 15 years ~ they know me here, ya know!! I have a WONDERFUL mailman that I love dearly. He has become really interested in sweeping since I started ~ lol! Always wanting to know if I am really winning or not ~ hates my eBay habit ~lol!! Not sure what I am giving him yet.

I always give our mailman a gift ~ our trashman ~ and of course our kid's busdriver's!!!! They are very important people!!!

I was a USPS mail carrier sub for a brief time during the Christmas season one year. Mail carriers can't accept gifts of monetary value more than $10.00 according to post office rules.

I thought the rule was $25, though a quick check seems to confirm the $20 limit. However, it is per person (source in federal speak) so perhaps if you really like the postal carrier, you could give more (up to $50 limit in a calendar year). I tend to give $25 myself.

For folks like newspaper deilvery, etc., I tend to give them the cost of one month's bill. Of course, I laugh when i see the envelope from the newspaper person who delivers the weekly free newspaper.... I might give them a $5 GC if I have one. Hmm... I have one for a gas station in NH that I'll never use... :) Or $10 Dave & Busters.... [not local...]

We tip the postal guy at holidays because he picks up packages at the door and it is so much nicer than having to go to the post office.

But our snowplow driver gets the biggest tip!!! Last year we had over 100 inches of snow and that X-mas tip sure made our driveway a lot easier to get in and out of!!! (unless there was a substitute guy!)

We wouldn't tip the snowplower. They get major, major moola and push their overtime over what's realistic which even includes catnapping and dumping down extra sand that's not needed just to get the overtime in, and this goes for each state I've lived in. I've never seen any township workers even come close to hurting for money! Their pay is unbelievable.

well, ours were unbelievable, especially last year. They worked non-stop. I gave them coffee too, especially during the one where we got 39 inches of snow and they worked non-stop for three days and stayed in the fire station because couldn't go home to their families between shifts and just slept there.

Anyway, they would do a T-turn at the end when given enough motivation. We are at the end of the road, and although snow was piled up to the roof, they would take time to do one extra plow they aren't required to in our driveway! so the tip was way worth it :)

a little sugar goes a long way :) I am not sure if it was a tip or a bribe, lol!

Oh I'm so glad I live in the south  We are all in shorts right now. I can't imagine having to worry about the guy that plows the snow. When we get three inches we are like maniacs trying to get out and play in it. We know that within hours it will probably be gone.

We were in shorts today also ~ but it is also short lasting. Might be getting some snow on Thanksgiving ~ yea, probably just some flurries, but snow nevertheless!!
