I just rec'd an email stating I won 1st place in the Indianapolis 500 sweeps (prize: autographed driver suit). I was sent an affidavit to have notarized with my info (ie. name, address, phone #, email, and SSN). Is this normal? Why do they need my SSN? Is it for an IRS 1099? I'm kinda skeptical to release this kind of info. And what am I gonna do with a driver suit? I guess I will have to try and sell it. Thanks for any info. Carmen

Did you win from this one?

Have you checked the rules? They are a pdf document, and detail winner notification etc. Here is a portion, in case you haven't read it, or want to refresh your memory about notification, accepting/declining prize etc.:

"The potential winners will be notified by mail, email or phone. Each potential winner (parent/legal guardian if winner is a minor in his/her state of residence) of a Grand, First, or Second Prize will be required to sign and return to Administrator within ten (10) days of the date notice or attempted notice is sent, an Affidavit of Eligibility, Liability and Publicity Release in order to claim his/her prize. If a potential winner cannot be contacted, fails to sign and return the Affidavit of Eligibility, Liability and Publicity Release within the required time period, or prize is returned as undeliverable, potential winner forfeits prize. All potential winners must continue to comply with all terms and conditions of these Official Rules; and winning is contingent upon fulfilling all requirements. In the event that a potential winner of a Grand through Seventh Prize is disqualified for any reason, Sponsor will award the applicable prize to an alternate winner by random drawing from among all remaining eligible entries..."

Yes, that's the one I won. I read the rules and understand an affidavit is req'd, I just want to make sure it's ok to give my SSN.

Normally, to claim any prize worth more than $600, you have to provide your SSN for tax purposes. You can, however, dispute the actual value of the item when you file your taxes. How you can actually determine the fair market value of an autographed driver's suit is beyond me. There are a few listed on ebay but none actually have bids on them. Congrats :headbang:
