\n European and American roulette are based on the same basic idea but their wheels are different. European roulette has only one zero. American roulette has an additional zero pocket. That small change alters the number of possible outcomes, along with the odds behind each bet. The two versions also differ in their wheel layouts, and some single-zero games have rules that are not usually found at American tables.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>The Wheel and Number Layout<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\n A European roulette wheel has 37 pockets. Numbers 1 through 36 are divided between red and black, while 0 is green. An American wheel has the same 36 red and black numbers, plus two green pockets: 0 and 00. This brings the total to 38. The numbers also appear in a different order around the two wheels. European roulette uses the single-zero wheel; American roulette has its own layout based on 0 and 00. The main numbered section still has 1 through 36 in both versions, so the difference is easy to miss. \n Both roulette versions have most of the roulette bets you know. Players can bet on a single number, two adjacent numbers, a row of three, corners of four numbers, dozens, columns, red or black, odd or even and numbers between 1-18 or 19-36. Red covers 18 numbers on both wheels, but European roulette has 19 losing results including 0, while American roulette has 20 because both 0 and 00 are green.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>House Edge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\n The extra 00 has a larger effect on the house edge than the small difference in individual probabilities might suggest. For most standard European roulette bets, the house edge is about 2.70%. In American roulette, it is about 5.26%. The standard payouts are generally unchanged; the difference comes from adding another possible result without changing those payouts.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n American roulette also has a five-number bet covering 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3. It normally pays 6:1. This particular bet has a house edge of about 7.89%, so its mathematics differ from the other standard American bets.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>La Partage and En Prison Rules<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\n Some single-zero games have special rules on even-money bets. Two common examples are La Partage and En Prison<\/a>. These are most often found in French roulette. They\u2019re not on every European table. With La Partage, an even-money bet loses only half its value when the ball lands on 0. The other half is returned. This brings the house edge on these bets down to about 1.35%. En Prison is different. If 0 appears, an even-money bet can remain on the table for the next spin rather than being settled immediately. What happens next is dependent on the rules of the game.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Standard Payouts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\n Payouts on European roulette and American roulette are pretty much the same. A single number bet pays 35:1, a two number split pays 17:1, and a three number street pays 11:1. A corner of four numbers pays 8:1 and a six-line bet pays 5:1. Dozens and columns pay 2:1. Red or black, odd or even, and low or high bets pay 1:1. The American version of the roulette therefore does not generally offer larger standard payouts in return for having an extra pocket.
