What kind of pet do you have?

Are you a dog person? Cat? Hamster? Rabbit? OR big scary snake?

We just got a cute little Chihuahua. Rocky and Kailey have been wanting a dog for years. I am more of a little pet person, hamster, rabbit. I have allergies to cats, and some dogs. Well I've done alot of research and decided on a Chihuahua. Kailey and Rocky are totally in love with it. It's really cute, follows Kailey around, and cuddles on her. I got her off of craigslist, for $160. Yea thats a lot of money. But when I thought about what the previous owner payed. IT's not that much. The dog is a year old. Up to date with all shots. Also just had her new shots 2 days ago. So I don't have take her for a year, unless she gets sick or something.

I have a couple questions though.
1. The dog keeps doing this body shake. Like if it had just had a bath, and was shaking water off. But there is no water on the dog. Why does it do that?
2. How to keep it from getting fleas? We walked it around the neighborhood today, and I noticed our neighborhood has lots of dogs. I am scared of it getting fleas. We live in fl, which is horrible for fleas. At my old house we had bad fleas (but didn't have pets in the house) but our neighbors had tons of animals, and they all had fleas. That was a nightmare. So my question is, flea treatments/shampoos whatever they are called, are they only for when your dog has fleas. Or is thier a way to prevent them?

Wish I could put a picture up but can't figure out how.

You live in Fla which means you have to treat the little guy for both fleas and heartworms. One monthly flea treatment that is available for very small dogs is Advantage, which comes in a 1-11 lb dog size.

Frontline Plus has a teeny dog size as well. Ask your vet what treatment s/he has had the best experiences with for small dogs as they can be rather delicate. Very small dogs generally shake because of low blood sugar, or they are freezing to death. Tiny critters like that can freeze easily. Does he have a coat/sweater? If its the least bit chilly there they can rapidly become chilled.

Chihuahuas shake a lot. It is like nerves or something. They are sometimes not real tolerant of kids either so watch the little fellow around Kailey until they get really used to one another.

I wouldn't buy anything flea or heartworm stuff over the counter. Make sure to get something good from the vet. The ones at the stores (such as Wal-Mart) have cheaper ingredients and have been known to cause side effects for animals including seizures and death.

And small dogs are unusually sensitive to chemicals. Tiny dogs make lousy pets around kids, because they break so easily. It takes very, very little to break their backs, necks or ribs. I hated fostering them because they were so fragile and touchy. Their blood sugar can rapidly go out of whack, resulting in seizures, they can freeze, if you trip over them they're dead. I'd rather look after tarantulas than Chihuahuas! I never managed to kill one, but it was sheer dumb luck...

I have a chihuahua too...he is around 8 years old and yes he shakes alot...it is just something chihuahuas do. Tico absolutely loves kids...and I know that most chihuahuas are not good around kids but I believe if they are raised around little kids then they will be just fine...when my little man sees a kid he flips out and wants to kiss them all over! They are the most loving dogs around and they love to cuddle! Hope you enjoy your chihuahua as much as I Love and enjoy mine! Congrats Tiff!

Got your pic tiff. The dog is cute. And kailey is as adorable as ever. :)

well I think alot of folks already know what kind of pet I have. I big PITA sheltie. Or as I like to refer to him the fat

fur ball.

I could never have a chihuahua. They are way to small for this family. The kids are a little rambunctious from time to time and I just know the dog would get squished.

Last night Kailey took two of her plastic containers from under her bed, one little and one big.
And she made a bed out of them on the floor.
I went in to check on them, and Kailey was asleep, but precious was still awake. It was funny, Precious just looked at me like.. what are u doing.

:sunny: Enjoy that new family member! She is adorable. We love our little dog. She has been the best dog. She is a Chinese Crested Powderpuff. Tammy is right about the flea treatments. The store brands are way to harsh for little dogs. Check with your vet.
