Got a surprise letter in the mail today that I was a first prize winner in the "Walmart August-October Sweepstakes" for a $100 Walmart gift-card. I'm not sure if this was the ongoing Walmart survey sweeps or what it was exactly but it's certainly my best win in about a year and a half so woo-hoo!

I got a $10.00 check in the mail from 'Publisher's Clearing House' a couple of days ago. It has a "VIP Elite" logo on it so I'm not 100% sure whether this is a win or a reward for reaching some kind of level regarding site usage (although that seems like it would be expensive for them). $10 may...

I generally don't bother to unsubscribe from e-mail lists unless I find the content to be offensive. As Amy says - sometimes unsubscribing too early will disqualify you. Also, I've found that as a sweeper it's probable that you're going to eventually get 100+ spam e-mails a day no matter what...

That being said... don't let my post scare you away or anything! Aside from the very obvious "foreign lottery" and "Nigerian Prince wants to give you $" scams I've only gotten like 2 suspect looking win notices in my 5+ years of sweeping.

Some steps I use to ensure legitimacy: 1. Ask yourself if this is a sweepstakes that you remember entering. If you never entered for the prize that you just "won" the odds of being a scam are probably high. 2. The notification should come from a business or prize service e-mail address...
