Asking for a Little Support for My Son’s Halloween Sweepstakes Dream I hope this is okay to share here — there aren’t many places where parents truly understand what it’s like when your child has severe sensory issues but still wants to experience the joy of things like trick-or-treating and dressing up as their favorite comic character.
I spent two months handmaking my son’s Ghost Rider costume so it wouldn’t touch his face. It’s built from a bike helmet (with a special lip so the mask sits away from his skin), paper mache, real working lights, and even a moving mouth that opens and closes and touches below his chin, not his face. I even made the leather chaps and a matching fire bucket by hand.
We entered what was supposed to be an in-person Halloween costume contest, and after driving over an hour to get there, they later changed it to an online contest — the winner now being decided by Facebook likes.
Even without many online or local friends, my son made it all the way to the finals!
He’s now in the running to win $1,000, which would help us create a sensory-friendly space for him — things like a blackout tent, sensory room upgrades, and funding for his special interests (coding and technology).If you can take just a second to click “like” on his Ghost Rider photo, it would mean the world to us.
