AVG antivirus software

Great question. I think it is the free version, but I went through a company as I was having some computer problems and they installed it remotely. He entered a code so it isn't just the 30 day trial, but not sure if his company receives some special pricing to give you more than just the normal version the general population could download. It does say it is AVG Web Tuneup version 4.2.0.886.

I would first uninstall and then reinstall the AVG product.

Here's a link to download AVG free - careful the "paid" version is also available. I Googled AVG free version to find it. I believe you want the orange button - AVG AntiVirus Free - Free download and software reviews - CNET Download.com

Avg Support - I think this is for the "paid " products - https://support.avg.com/?l=en_US

AVG Community Support - I think this is for both free & paid. It's users like you posting and answering questions - https://support.avg.com/answers#!/feedtype=RECENT_REPLY&dc=All&criteria=ALLQUESTIONS

If that doesn't work, here's a list of free anti virus programs from PC Magazine - The Best Free Antivirus for 2015 | PCMag.com Make sure you get a free program that also has a firewall.

A few years back, many web sites sites recommended combining Bitdefender (antivirus) with ZoneAlarm (firewall). Both programs together gave you full protection. I'm not so sure this is necessary any longer. Zone Alarm now has an anti virus although it looks skimpy and Bitdefender may now have a firewall.

Personally, my wife and I use the paid version of Norton. We buy the 5 device product to cover her desk top and my lap top.

Thanks for the advice. I'm actually hoping I don't have bigger problems as when I talked to HP today, they had never heard of the company that helped me yesterday. It was a chat window that came up when I was on the HP site and they called to help me with the printer drivers and said I had other issues which they supposed "fixed", so now I hoping my whole system isn't compromised. Taking it in to a local company tomorrow. Ugh!

kathleenlegacy - AVG Web Tuneup? I'd never heard of this;

AVG Web Tuneup is a browser add-in with three important functions. First, it rates the safety of the websites you visit, with an option to get details like the server location and whether SSL security is used. You can also click for a full site report.

The Do Not Track feature, turned off by default, actively prevents ad networks, social media buttons, and Web analytics tools from tracking your browsing activity. Unlike the similar feature in Abine Blur and other products, AVG doesn't flaunt its activities by notifying you of the number of trackers blocked on each site; it just does the job. Note that not all trackers are blocked by default. You can change those settings, but I found them hard to understand. What are Spot200 and OrangeSoda? Why is one blocked and not the other?

SecurityWatch

The third component of Web Tuneup is the Browser Cleaner. It reports on browsing traces such as cookies and cached files, and lets you wipe them out with a click. Note, though, that Shift+Ctrl+Del brings up the built-in browser cleanup dialog for Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer, and the built-in dialogs offer more-detailed control.

kathleenlegacy - do you remember the name of the company? If they are no good, it would help others in the future if they searched this site if you posted the name of the company, thanks!
