I got the paperwork yesterday from the Black and Mild; Follow the Aroma contest saying that I had won the Royce Leather Organizer Duffle. (Value $600) This was an instant prize that someone apparently didn't return the paperwork for, since I never got a winning message on the game. I've won a few things that way over the years. Goes to show that you have to watch your emails.

Congrats to you. I got the same email. I didn’t remember getting a win either, but I’ll take it. Not crazy about having to pay taxes on a duffle bag...a crazy expensive one at that. It’s listed at $480 on Amazon but has a retail of $600. Not something I would ever buy.
 
What a neat way to win! I've never had that happen before. Congrats to you! I won 2 items from them - a cooler and a grill. Nice prizes!
 
Print out the amazon page and save it for your taxes. You can use it to off set the difference. You only have to pay taxes on the fair market value of the prize when you win it. Many times the value of a prize will drop by the time it's actually awarded.

If you're in the 20% tax bracket, the tax difference on $600 and $480 is only $24.

I remember when you could buy a carton of cigarettes for less than that.

If the prize is valued at $480 then you don't have to fill out a tax form. If the value is over $599 then you do need to fill out a tax form. So you will be taxed on the $600 Duffle Bag which I'm guessing may be why the winners didn't accept the prize.
