Can a hot water heater burn out??

I have a strange question.
Today a man had to come over to check my refridge, because its not working right. The freezer isnt freezing. He said the landlord needs to buy a new one.
But thats not my question. Ok after I realized when I went to wash my hands, all I was getting was cold water. I even turned it all the way to hot. Which we usually have really hot water. So this was wierd. Then just a little while ago I went to take my shower. Freezing cold water!!! It was not fun.

I thought about it, and realized that yesterday the hotwater heater seemed hot when I touched it. (My microwave is on top of it, so I leaned on it, and it felt really hot).
And then later that day, the hot water was really hot. LIke scalding hot.

So do you think the hotwater heater burned out. Or maybe the guy did something to it. But that wouldn't make sense, because he was only around the refridgerator. I want my hot water back.

 Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever. Yes a water heater can quit working. If it's an electric water heater be sure to check the breaker in fuse box.

Hey thanks for answering so fast.
I looked at the breaker. I dont understand all the buttons. But I clicked the button (that said water heater), and checked if the water was cold, and then I clicked it the other way, and checked the water. SHould I have waited a long time.

The water heater doesnt feel like its working.

If the water heater has been off for awhile it will take awhile for the water to heat up in the water heater. It's not instant.

ok. if im facing the water heater. And I flip the button to the left. Would that be turning it on or off? Etc.

Its not labeled on the thing.

Left is usually off. Are you flipping a switch on the water heater or in the breaker box? On the breaker box flip the breaker for the water heater to the left than to the right.

on the breaker box. I don't know where the water heater switch is

:sunny: If it's not the breaker than it can be the thermostat or the heating element. I am assuming this is an electric water heater. If it's gas than there are a couple of other things that it could be.

When you get a new hot water heater, or the landlord fixes that one, its real important to set the water temp below 120 so kids won't scald themselves to death. :nono:
The pressure release valve on our water heater is frozen shut so we're waiting for it to explode before we get a new one

lol hmmm......BOOM. the whole house explodes.
:nono: I'm not touching anything. I bet I'm going to have a hard time getting kailey to take a shower. Until it gets fix, I guess will have go dirty or freeze.

We just had the same problem today! We have a gas water heater and the pilot went out, which means we had to relight it.When its really windy this happens, because our house is drafty.Good luck, with four kids I know how much "no hot water" can suck! :cussing:

They make big human wipes, too. You can microwave them and they're big enough to wash an entire person (don't start at the feet!). They're in with the adult diapers at WalMart. You may not want to know why I'm in the adult diapers section, however

If you have to, buy or use every pot in the house that you have and boil bathing water. I had to do this a few months ago because, our hot water heater flooded the laundry room and my landlord had to order one. It was a pain in the behind but, 2 kids+1 hubby+myself=equals EWWWWEEEE lol. Good luck, sorry to hear it's giving out.
