I am not sure if this is a legitimate win

Hi - I received the below as part of an email from the UGO.com :

To verify this information, please include a copy of your driver’s license or federally issued identification within the next 7 days, (deadline: November 11, 2010) to avoid forfeiting your prize.

Please fax to 917.934.6780 or send a scanned copy to [email protected].

If you decide to decline this prize, please let us know. If you have any questions, please email us at [email protected].

Once again, congratulations!
UGO Entertainment

the total prize package is $70.00. Does this sound correct to have to fax my ID? Have had my credit card number stolen twice so I try to be cautious. Please let me know if you have won anything from this site and this is legit. Thanks!

I have never won from UGO, but I just looked at the expired sweeps from UGO.com and there are a few recently expired sweeps listed.

I guess there are a couple of general questions. Did you enter the particular sweeps you received the winning email from? If yes, it is probably a legitimate win (except in those obviously fake emails, supposedly from large companies like Microsoft, for example.) You could check your expired sweeps to see if you entered. Without more information, I can't tell if it is one of the expired sweeps listed at SA.

The other question is how much personal information you are willing to send. People have different comfort levels. I received a similar request several months ago for a sweeps I entered and won, (ARV $300) but I did not want to fax a copy of my driver's license. I declined. The sponsor did not offer an alternative but said they would choose someone else. Looking back, I wish I tried to suggest an alternative, like a notarized affidavit, which would confirm my identity without having me send so much personal information directly to the sponsor. I suppose it is easier for some sponsors to just ask for info, and if the winner refuses, they can select someone else.

So, it does sound legit to me, and yes, some sponsors do ask you to fax your ID.

Maybe you can find a way to provide the information requested, without disclosing unneeded information, such as your ID number/ssn. That way, you both win.
