Jury duty!!!!

Me??? Got picked to do jury duty. You gotta be kidding me. I hate driving to the court house, its always busy and I cant park very good. I don't know how to dress nice. And I am intimidated by professional people. Plus whos going to watch Kailey.

The upside....maybe it will be interesting. I always wondered what it was like. I want like a rape or child abuse case. I know that sounds horrible. But I would love to be like oh they are guilty!!! Guilty guilty guilty!!!! HmMm but I guess then I wouldn't be able to do it because I am a victim of rape.

Has anyone done jury duty before? Is it a big deal? How long does it usually take?

I've done it, and it's completely boring. I don't know about down there; but up here in the NJ/NY/PA area, you just have to call in and see first if they need you to come in. Years ago, you used to have to show up and sit around doing nothing for days if you weren't picked.

My sister had jury duty before she said when she got there they were told the case was dismissed but she ended up getting a $20 or $30 check, for there time

 I've had jury duty twice in my life so far. Both were small cases...nothing too interesting. But it was a good educational experience, and I did feel proud to do my civic duty. :) Just remember, if you work...your boss must allow you to take off for jury duty, and in some states, MUST pay you normal wages. Then there's the small stipend for being a jurist.

Maybe you'll get some huge mafia case, where the jury must be sequestered in a hotel for weeks and weeks, with the Mob threatening to kill the jury members and blow up the courthouse....! Now that would be an interesting case, to say the least. :headbang:

lol your a dork.
I dont think we have mobs in florida.
Well I can opt out because I have a child under 6. But my mom thinks I should do it.

:sunny: Just did jury duty at the beginning of the month. Here they will pay for child care expenses. Don't get too excited over the jury pay. It is $10 a day here. I signed to have them keep the money just to avoid the extra paperwork for taxes. It is your civic duty to serve. It would be a great experience for you.

Bite your tongue off!!! That is a fear of mine if I ever get picked...again!

I got papers saying they wanted me to be a juror when I was 7 months pregnant, back in 2001. I called the courthouse and told them just that, that I was 7 months pregnant and the lady told me I didn't have to come in. That was a huge relief!!

Do it. I did it during the week of 9/11. It was a murder case which is bad enough. Then the towers were struck and they made us all remain in the court house. After we finally heard about the World Trade Center - of course all anyone wanted to do was go get their kids and go to church to pray. But then they made a mad dash to rush us all out of the courthouse for fear that any federal building was in danger. (trust me, I live in Podunk, USA - Terrorist couldn't even find this little town) Anyway, after all of that, I was amazed to see for myself how very fair the system is and how it actually worked! The judge was and is a personal friend of mine and told me that we made the right decision and had we gone with any other verdict he would have been shocked. The guy is still in prison today. After it was all over we found out that the guy threatened the judges life and everyone in the courtroom! Oh joy, I didn't sleep for a week. All said and done- I would do it again in a minute. Great to see the wheels of justice work.

My experience completely disgusted me. The defendent was charged with five counts. It involved what happened during her arrest. The cops clearly were lying; and, although they were ordered not to discuss their testimony with anyone, they blatantly told others who hadn't testified yet as to what they stated on the stand. To make matters worse, it was clear that the defendent would be cleared of charges. So, the judge decided to change the wording of one of the charges. Under the law, it stated that the defendent had to commite "A" and "B". The judge ordered us to go by how he interpreted the law, and he reworded it by saying that the defendent had to commit "A" and/or "B". Two totally different things. One she had to have commited both actions. His wording changed it that she only had to commit one part of it. Because of that, it got nasty in the jury room; and, when we called the judge out for the second time to review that charge, he screamed at us that he told us to go by what he said. :cussing: :nono:

My most memorable jury duty involved a case where a jogger was jogging up Preston Road in north Dallas. Preston Road, at that time, was a two-lane road leading from Dallas north to the 'burbs. Well...this jogger was jogging on the roadside...on the actual pavement, and not the roadside. Inevitably, a truck came along and sideswiped the jogger with his truck mirror. Allegedly, this caused the jogger to tumble off the road and into the grass, where he claimed back injury (although he had jumped right back up and was walking).

The jogger sues the truck driver for hit and run. The driver, for his part, could not swerve into the oncoming lane of traffic to avoid the jogger on the roadside, so the truck driver passed as close to the jogger as possible, but the side mirror struck the jogger. The jury had to determine if the jogger was at fault for his own injuries by jogging on the road instead of the roadside. And if the truck driver was at fault for hitting the jogger, how much responsibility for blame should the truck driver assume for the accident.

During jury deliberations, I believed the jogger was at fault for jogging in the road, especially on a busy north-south thoroughfare, and that the truck driver made a reasonable attempt to NOT hit the jogger as he passed by him in the road. Another woman believed the truck driver was at fault, but not to the extent that the rest of the jury members believed him to be. So, it was a hung jury...with me and this other jurist voting the truck driver NOT guilty. I enjoyed jury duty, and hope to get chosen again one day. Who knows?

Re: Jury duty!!!! UPDATE

Well I called the phonenumber. ANd they picked my group. So I have to report to jury duty. I'm actually kind of excited. Still scared about getting lost downtown. It is so hard to drive down there, some have one way streets, its confusing.
And kailey is going to stay at school the whole day. Which they said is only around $10. Since shes already there for free for vpk.
And the good thing is, since she got sick, she missed out on the zoo field trip today. So that refund, will pay for that day. So Monday I'll be at jury duty. My dad said one of his friends had to go for a week, it was a murder case. Hmmm...

Re: Jury duty!!!! UPdate

:sunny: I'm Freee weeeeee!!!!
So the jury duty was very boring at times. Lots of sitting, etc. But I did learn alot. I didn't get picked. But did have to stay for 2 days, until they figure out the jury. Met alot of cool people. It was a civil case. Malpractice lawsuit. I think I def would have sided with the wife whos husband died. SO  I didn't get picked. I think it was because of my age though. Well Im glad thats all over. No more getting lost downtown. And Kailey school is only going to charge me $20 for the days she had to stay. :)
