Aren't audiobooks great? You can listen to a great story while keeping your eyes on the road during your morning commute. And if your eyesight is deteriorating it's an alternative to learning to read Braille.
They're also really helpful for auditory learners. Throughout high school and college, I was assigned several classic novels as required reading. I wish I'd known about audiobooks because being able to listen to the novels while I read would have increased my comprehension.
Spotify, a streaming service primarily for music, has a substantial audiobook collection that you can listen to for free. You can hear work from Langston Hughes, Virginia Woolf, Edgar Allan Poe, and so much more! The "Audiobooks" section alone has over 80 hours of books you can listen to, including popular titles like "1984," "The Great Gatsby," "Pride and Prejudice" and "Great Expectations."
To listen to these books you need to download Spotify to your desktop or laptop and/or get the app for your Apple or Android device. It's free to download and you can create a free account. Once you open the site or app on your device, select "Browse," then scroll all the way down and select "Word." This is where you'll find all the audiobooks, along with famous speeches and language lessons.
There are limitations to a free account. Spotify playlists are set to play songs in a random order so if you build a playlist that consists of book chapters, there's no way to listen to the chapters in order. There are also commercials and you need to be connected to Wi-Fi or use data to listen.
Purchasing a Premium Spotify account eliminates these limitations and also lets you download playlists to your device. It's normally $9.99 a month for one user, $14.99 for a family of five, and $4.99 for students. But right now they're having a special: three months for 99 cents! It's an introductory rate and after the first three months you can cancel the service or switch to a free account. This offer ends January 1, 2017 so sign up before it's too late!
