Name something you're doing this week to...

I thought this might be a good thread for ideas.

Help the environment-
I have a stack of magazines that I just finished going through. I am going to take them to the hospital on Friday (The day I get to go to town each week) and leave them in the waiting room to be enjoyed by others.

Started saving cans recently, we weren't saving them ourselves because, they don't give but, 50 something cents a pound here. In CA. I always saved cans and bottles because, of the great refund back on them. I figure that by the time I can turn these in (you have to drive about 30-45 min. to a center) I can use the cash for an event or something during birthdays or holidays. Just one trip could possibly purchase a birthday gift or even fund a thanksgiving dinner.

Seriously considering a purchase on a few reusable shopping bags. However, I reuse my grocery bags for trash bags and to carry things in. Not only does this help the environment by recycling the bags, it also saves $$ reusing them.

I don't know if this counts but, I really want to plant a few veggies and fruits this year to save on our grocery bill. Plus, less pesticides and chemicals going on the food so better for the environment.

I plan to purchase at least 1-2 lightbulbs at a time that lasts up to 5 years and helps save energy costs.

 I feel the same way about making little changes around here,

As far as cans, plastic, and glass, our town has a good recycling program for that and newspapers
and cardboard too. They come with the recycle truck once a week to pick up, so we've been participating
in that since we moved here 16 years ago.

My husband replaced almost all of our lightbulbs with the squiggly looking low impact bulbs ( i forgot what
they are called) about 6 months ago to save energy.

Yesterday on Earth Day, I went food shopping and I bought 2 of the reusable shopping bags. I felt dorky
at first since most people were still using plastic bags at the store, but I really want to make a change and
use less of those plastic bags. Those reusable bags are great, the handles are very sturdy, and they hold
about 3 plastic bags worth of groceries in each. So I will continue to use those from now on.

I felt good about it, and I'm trying to be more conscious of what we use around the house.

We are slowly switching out the bulbs and put in 2, eco-friendly toilets back in Sept. 2007.

We save our aluminum cans for Mother's co-worker.

We have our own plastic grocery bags we reuse. The grocery totes are nice but just not big enough. I'd need 10 or more of them.

We have switched out all but about 5 lightbulbs right now...just waiting on them to burn out before we switch them!

We have saved cans for years...we give the money to the kids for vacation.

I want to switch over to the reuseable bags, but I use so many of the plastic ones around the house...I am thinking about making a half and half switch...I would guess that anything would help.

Any small changes will help! I would like to do more, but around here we are sort of limited. Small towns aren't the best for recycling!

I have switched out all our bulbs with the exception of the closets (over about a year's time). We have a compost tumbler and make our own compost (not that much trouble to do and makes some great compost for use in garden areas and around trees). We recycle our cans and put the money into the 4 year old grand daughter's savings account. I haven't gone to the reusable shopping bags yet; however I don't throw away the shopping bags. I return them to Wal-Mart for them to re-use. Instead of just planting flowers in my flower bed I added vegetables into the bed. I figure if I am watering the flower garden anyway I should make it a "fruitful" area. I never pour out water that people leave out that they don't drink. I always water plants with it. We switched from having some electric and some solar landscape lighting to all solar lighting this year. We also just put in solar panels for heating our pool.

I really didn't realize until I typed this how many little things I've done. I do what I can, and if we all do a little bit it will make a difference.
