received 50 dollar prepaid american express from rewards..certified $5.65 they paid. letter adressed from one name, address in dallas tx. tried to call to see why..not listed. american express said it is prepaid and would look into it. rewards gave me a womans name, address, phone in illinois. i called & wrote..no answer. you get rewards when you buy something. i did not buy and am afraid to use as it might commit me to something. nothing in letter except here is your reward. ?????? know anything re: it???

I just looked to see if I had anymore American Express cards because I was thinking that the term Rewards was used as opposed to dollars. Found several prepaid Visas and Mastercards (some that I forgot I had!) I did find a AE card. Look on the back to see if there is a website. I think all the cards I have ever gotten have a website to check balance and some to see transactions. The AE card I have has americanexpress.con/mygiftcard does yours have the same website listed? If it does I would say that it was a prize. I have received a few surprise prepaid cards over the years that I never did figure out where they came from, but that I used. I don't think I have ever received on that didn't also include the Cardholder agreement paper. I do have a prepaid Visa that has Rewardcard printed on the front of it that was a prize.
malka - The ones you DO need worry about are those that require an affirmative action on your part to activate the card - like giving them your bank account number, or a credit card number. NEVER give out that info for a win!!!
IF you received paperwork that indicated just using the prepaid card would somehow automatically enroll you in their program, then maybe I would worry, yet I truly can't see how they could enforce that?
As pmeek notes - look for a website and/or phone # to check the card balance, and be aware that even with *some* prepaid cards there can be monthly maintenance fees automatically deducted, so I always use them up quick to avoid them!
