Does anyone know why some codes are so unreadable, e.g. sideways, non-standard fonts, lines running through, etc? I 'm not just complaining, I'd really like to know.

To explain this the best I can, there a programs that are able to read weak captcha. A weak captcha would be one that has very little background and foreground noise and the letters are easy to read . Its that noise and objects in your case that throw off spammers captcha reading software.

So with a more advanced captcha system, they are able to keep out automatic sign up and spammers at the cost of it sometimes not being readable.

This page shows what one particular bit of software can break but the main thing i'm showing this to you for is take a look at the diffrence between the good ones and bad ones.
