Google has implemented a new feature which enables you to type a
telephone number into the search bar and hit enter and you will be
given the person's name and address. If you then hit MapQuest, you
will get a map to the person's house. Everyone should be aware of
& nbsp;this!
As far as I can tell this only works on home phones and not cell phones.

It's a nationwide reverse telephone book.

If a child gives out his/her phone number, someone can now look it up
to find out where he/she lives. The safety issues are obvious, and
alarming.

Note that you can have your phone number removed or blocked. I tried
my number and it came up along with the Mapquest and directions
straight to my house. I did fill out the removal form for myself, and
encourage all of you to do the same. Quite scary.

Please look up your own number.

In order to test whether your phone number is mapped, go to: Google
(http://www.google.com/ <http://www.google.com/> ) Type your phone number in the search bar
(i.e. 555-555-1212) and hit enter. If you want to B L O C K Google
from divulging your private information, simply click on your telephone
number and then click on the Removal Form. Removal takes 48-hours.

Check your own number and although this may not apply to you if you
have an unlisted number or cell phone as primary contact, but you may
know someone who needs to know this.

I tried this and I am supposed to have an unlisted number. It came up with my name, address and I clicked on map and sure enough it gave directions to my house. Not cool!!! I requested it be removed.

OK - so you removed your info from google......

There are numerous sites, some free, some paid, where a reverse phone number search can be run - then someone simply has to plug your address into Mapquest to get the same results. An example of a free site that can do reverse phone number searches is whitepages.com.

I just don't want you to get a false sense of security having blocked this info on google - our info is still out there to be had if someone wants it bad enough.

Here is the Snopes page with more info:

I am not happy about this. I went to whitepages and put in my phone # and not only my name came up but my husbands, our address and our ages. wth? I pay for an unlisted phone #. That is ridiculous. Thanks for posting the info. I quess there is no point in trying to have anything private anymore. :cussing:

I never bother trying to remove info from any of these places. I figure if someone wants to find me bad enough they will find a way to find me regardless of what I do.

Mine didn't come up! One reason ~ we didn't get a private number, we just didn't put our names and address in the white pages. You can have anything you want put in there. Our's is listed as JT Piper ~ Greenville.

First of all, that is both of our first intials together. Then we had them omit the address. We got tired of paying for the private number so we opted to try this instead. We sometimes get the occasional person asking for another Piper, but it works out great!!

My sister had her's listed as Brutus Beadnell ~ her bulldog  :crazytongue:

Ohhhh my goodness... Thank you Momma of 3... My eyes popped outta my head... You're right, I removed myself with the quickness... Thanks girly...
