lol I wanna win hannah montana and chick flicks!!!!! Shoot I wanna win anything right now. I haven't won anything good in a while.

Oh I could so do the cash option! I just don't want the hassle of selling it, but I guess it could be worth my while after all.

Yeah, I don't like the jewelry either. I don't like long, dangly earrings or pearls(necklace). Where the hell would I wear the pearls and with what? My JCPenney capris?

I meant to answer the quote - I haven't worn jewelry since my toddler was born and among others I need to start up again (I would adore a manicure - weekly - but as a sahm can't justify it) I haven't gotten into the habit. I chuckled at the capris thing.

I don't want to wear something that needs to be insured!

Or jewelry - I'd rather win a big screen tv then a necklace I might lose.

The funny part is folks think that they will GET the ARV on jewelry. Honey, it aint gonna happen. Most times, you get less than 50%.. if you are lucky. And in times like this, you aren't going to get that. Unless it's a one of a kind from some very well known jewelery, it rarely is worth what they say it is.

Funny story about the handbags. I know someone who entered a contest for People or something like that for the Academy Awards swag bag. The ARV was OVER $25,000. One day, she came home from work and there was a box sitting on the porch and inside was a note that she was the winner and everything in the box from the contest. Totally freaked her out becuase they sent it uninsured, not needing to be signed and with NO 1099 never came.

Inside were GC to Lazyboy for a few thousand, GC to American Airlines for $1500 and other GC as well as everything else on the list.

She was smart and never posted it on another site, since a few of the woman have mental issues and seem to contact the IRS every time someone says they get a prize with no 1099. :nono:

Yeah, I hear you need to do your own checking and not rely on what they think your prizes are worth - especially customized items - which I hear can sometimes bring down the value of the item...and many times if you call them they will adjust their ARV or you can show your tax person what you found out.

What business is it of a stranger (or even a friend) what someone does with their taxes? Ridiculous. They should mind their own business. I would send in the money anyway - just because they sound flaky and they might have sent the 1099 in to the IRS but forgotten to send hers. But what she chooses to do is her business - and obviously it worked out okay.

Pretty much everything already mentioned but adding a high $$ amount of make-up. Why pay taxes on $1000 worth of make-up? Also don't want DVDs; how often can you watch the same movie.

For me, the prizes I go for depend on stage I'm in. Right now need cash for house maintenance, gas, or large wins like a TV, car, major appliance, or computer. Since I've never won big, working OT will probably pay for those things first. Next stage may be trips.

But... will always enter for candy. Can't have too much free Chocolate Sweepstakes & Giveaways.

Re: what do you NOT (want) to win

lol...

pretty much all of the above. But topping my list:

  • [li]Make-up[/li]
    [li]Feminine Hygene Products[/li]
    [li]Calls from the 'Little Mermaid"[/li]
    [li]"Free" tickets to a time-share presentation![/li]
    [li]Forgot! ... cleaning suplies![/li]

but I think that one thing tops my list:

A trip to New York City!!!

Been there, done that! Never do it again! It completely escapes me what makes all these sponsors think that everybody on the planet wants to go to New York City??? (That's like wanting to spend a holiday in Calcutta!)

Reminds me of once when I was transitting through JFK on my way to Ireland. As I walked up to the Aer Lingus desk to check-in, the nice young lady asked me, with a strong Irish accent, how she could help me. But before I got a word out of my mouth, she looked me over from head to hoof and just said "You just want to leave New York, right?"

LOL. She was absolutely right! I guess it showed!

(Best part was that on the way back I missed my connection and Aer Lingus put me up in NYC for 2 days!)

Well, I try not to enter:

Golf vacations, or any vacation that includes bikes/kayaking/mountain climbing/horseback riding, etc.
1-2 day trips to LA or NYC to attend an awards show - heck, I don't even watch the Oscars or Emmys at home
Any trip for a concert that I don't love the band (so almost all concert trips are out)
Anything NASCAR (although I will enter Indy Racing or the rare and totally coveted F1 Racing sweeps)
Almost all baby and kid things, unless it's something I know my little nieces would love
Really large TVs ... unless there is a smaller prize too - I don't want a TV bigger than 37" and would hate to try to sell one
And I agree on the jewelry and expensive handbags and sunglasses

I've become very careful with my entries, so most of my wins nowadays are things I can use (or occasionally sell easily).
