This is a site that SA keeps promoting their contests. they don't have a very public opt-out on their website to remove yourself from all the spam they start sending... and here is the shocking thing they send when you try to actually remove yourself from their e-mail list:
---------------------------

Your name is in queue to be removed from the www.wildaboutmovies.com database. But, since you entered any number of promotions on our site, (and we have your IP address, name, address and all other info you entered), after agreeing to our TERMS & CONDITIONS --- which include receiving our weekly newsletter, it may take up to 30 days to have your name removed.

Please do not enter any more promotions on our site, or input your email anywhere on www.wildaboutmovies.com, or we will be forced to forward your new entries to your local Attorney General's office, as your entry/entries will be a form of harassment, since you have chosen, even after agreeing to our newsletter, to OPT OUT.

We cannot keep adding and then removing your email address at will. And we will not! If it is ever added to our site again, we will take legal action.

Happy Holidays
www.wildaboutmovies.com
-----------------------------------

They sent me that form letter.

Now understand, I probably signed up for 1 contest last year and have skipped them when I see their contests... clearly this threat is bogus. You can't threat people with legal action if they leave your mailing list.

I think SA should remove them.

I'm quite aware of the policy and noted some other sites that have same. I have no problem with it. I enter their sweepstakes; and, every now and then, I get an email from them which I agreed to. There is no spam. I've had absolutely no problems with them, and I fully understand and agree with their policy. There are way too many people entering their's and other's sweepstakes just to unsubscribe when that sweepstakes is over and then sign up again when there's another sweepstakes they want to enter, then unsubscribe, subscribe, unsubscribe, subscribe............ I understand and agree with their statement. If I were in their shoes, I'd be ticked off too at people taking advantage of a website like that.

I understand what your saying, but geez, that doesn't mean you have to keep receiving their newsletter for life. That's a very ugly message to receive if you decide to opt out.

You can unsubscribe anytime, but I would have sent out something like that too after having people pull this stuff time and time again. Either you want to be a member or you don't. The sweepstakes should not play a part of it. They want to win the prize but don't really want to be a member. Well, then they shouldn't be entering the sweepstakes. That email is nothing. If it were me, I'd like to smack these people up side the head for wasting my time!! :crazytongue:

It still seems harsh to me. After being a member for 1 1/2 years, I should not receive a response like that just because I may want to opt out for some reason. Just doesn't seems like good business to me.

I wouldn't take it personally. It's just a computer-generated response and doesn't differentiate between the different reasons for unsubscribing.

I'm not a mod, and you can see that since it doesn't say "mod" under my name. I've been entering them for quite awhile with no problems whatsoever. Then again there were people accusing TheCelebrityCafe of the same kind of stuff that never panned out, and I won from them, the prize is here within a couple of days, and Dominick there is a hands-on person and answers all questions. It's everyone's choice what to enter and what not to enter. I've never had a problem with Wild About Movies, and I choose to continue to enter their sweeps.

"I wouldn't take it personally. It's just a computer-generated response..."

Um. It's a computer-generated response that someone running the site has has written. By hand. To be sent out to anyone who dares unsubscribe from their newsletter.

I think it's absolutely ridiculous, but it's also false bravado on their part. The AG will not do anything about people entering their contests when it's made freely available online, but their ISP *SHOULD* do something if this website is reported for spamming even after repeated attempts to remove themselves from the list. Submitter, if you asked 18 months ago to be removed and you are still getting the newsletter, report them to their ISP and/or AG - whoever keeps track of this kind of thing, and report them for spamming and not honoring your request for removal from their list.

the letter does seem a little over the top. I stopped entering them because you have to respond to a confirmation email and I never get one.

I just figured the webmaster, trying to run a business, just got fed up and wrote it when his emotions were flared up. That's why I wouldn't take it personally, and you know that we've all been guilty of that at some time in our lives.

I do get an email to respond to for each one. Maybe, you have something set to block certain things? I'm thinking of not blocking anymore, because I keep finding email I need in my deleted folder.

I suggest, though, if someone has an issue with a sweepstakes posted here that maybe they should email Ken (webmaster) first and take up with him and see what he says about it.

By the way, I ran a search on "WildAboutMovies Sweepstakes", and there most certainly are other sweepstakes sites posting their sweeps.

how do I unblock things. I even emailed them to let them know I wasnt getting confirmation emails and didnt hear back. dvd's are my favorite things (after cash of course) to win so I would like to enter their sweeps.

I love DVD's too. We win alot of them. I literally have to figure out where to start putting them, because our DVD shelves are already full!!

As for unblocking and blocking, I only know how to do it with Outlook Express. I don't know if you use that or something else. In Outlook, I would just put their email address in to accept email from them.

With situations like these I usually like to put it up to a vote amongst the members. For the record, even though we list these DVD sites on SA we don't get paid by any of them. Further, some of these DVD sites have been very arrogant and rude when we asked for a link back. ( Considering that they get free traffic from us on a daily basis I didn't think a link back was too much to ask ) Many of these sites don't do a very good job at prize administration too. I don't have any sympathy for their lack of customer service and if our members don't want certain ones listed we can put it up to a vote and its fine with me. :)

I, for one, would like to keep entering them. I never got spam from them, and I like their newsletter. I'm also starting to wonder if only certain people are getting that email mentioned above. There are people who will subscirbe and unsubscriber over and over again just to enter the sweepstakes, and I wouldn't blame them if those are the ones they are sending it to.

I don't think you get what I'm saying... there is a question if the site is even real.

Paramount Pictures is claiming fraud. The movie passes they give out are apparently fake.

They have their website registered (WHOIS) through a proxy service which hides your identity. A service that has been used by spammers.

Almost all the content (interviews, reviews) on the site is stolen from other websites with the author being "Chad Michaels" who apparently doesn't exist. It's a very infamous site according to many sources (google search!).

They apparently change their e-mail address every few days from various free web e-mail services.

gmail, yahoo, hotmail should not be legitimate addresses for big time websites. They ask you to unsubscribe through a Gmail address... that is no more than a free account someone opened up. It also changes all the time. IE: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]

Other sweepstakes sites removed them 2-3 years ago.

Ask yourself, what does this site sell or offer? How come they don't have sponsors? No phone number?

This is the form letter they used to send out according to journalist Eric Snider:
We have your name, address and zip code and IP address. You have been reported to the FBI as we have over 18 entries on file from you. And GoDaddy closed the investigation, with the information we provided to them - the info you inputted into our site - and whereby you AGREED no less than 18 times to our email newsletter.

DO NOT EVER VISIT OUR SITE AGAIN!

Quite frankly, I don't understand the interest you have with them. It sounds more like you're angry at them for some reason. I've seen people post that they used their movie tickets. However, it is to be understood that even though you have the pass, it's on a first come first serve basis.

I don't know where you're getting this information from. I've been looking over their privacy policy, etc., and don't see anything out of the norm.

Maybe, you should just move on from it. It really sounds more like you may have a vendetta against them for some reason.

I'm just a tech savvy 25. yr. old kid who noticed something isn't right when I received that first e-mail... You know what? I actually unsubscribed the wrong address and they still sent me that letter. You keep mentioning that they have a privacy policy... i'm saying it's not even real. The information is available on web about them.

It does appear that what you found is correct. They even have complaints on Mcafee Site Advisor. I do also find it odd that they use mutiple free email accounts on their site for feedback. The things that they are doing are typical spammer or fraud related. I am going to create a poll on the site and request member feedback on them.

And BTW there have been many sites banned from SA that don't have a product but offer large prizes with no visible sponsor and in some cases no winners list available.

Thank You,

-Ken
