Woman's World virus

I've got norton also on mine and it catches trojans and viruses all the time when I'm doing sweeps. I've had many get by norton also. I don't know what I'd do if my hb couldn't fix them.

Later in that thread I linked earlier admin posted:

The pop-up could actually have nothing to do with the magazine/sweepstakes sites that you are visiting. More than likely you picked up the virus somewhere else and its throwing scam pop-up windows periodically regardless of the website. You need to scan your system with a known virus protection product.

"If you are a novice computer/internet user you should definitely have regularly updated virus protection software". I recommend Norton Anti virus 2010 as it scans and loads quickly and does not slow your system down to a crawl. If you have the latest version of Windows you should also run windows defender scans to make sure your system is clean from the viruses that the antivirus programs do not catch.

YES, seriously- you can't blame the Women's World folks! They are not going to send people a virus- it's not them doing it. Banner ads can get hacked- I don't understand it all, but there are HTML viruses or something- put into the hacked banner ads. If you email the site in question and let them know- they will get their IT department on it. Women's World is a legit business, they are not doing this on purpose.

Besides a "real-time" anti-virus, like Norton, McAffee, AVG- which, by the way, you can get a nice version of for FREE for a home personal computer- you can put in AD-Aware, or Malware Bytes, which are free and they rock. Update and run them once a week!

KEEP your computer updates from Microsoft updated- the security patches! Specially if you still have XP there were a lot of holes in it, and it still important to run the security updates.

FIREWALLs. I disable Microsoft's firewall cause it's only one-way- it blocks incoming but never will tell you if you DO get something and then it is attempting to "dial out"! Zone Alarm is free and it will tell you when some program is asking permission to connect, so you can check up on it if it's hinky. I caught a major new virus that way in our laptop! A new program attempting to connect to the internet when you didn't do a thing- is suspect.

Happy computing. I think it's fun to learn all this stuff and keep my computer going like gangbusters. I am still using a very old home-made system which still has Windows ME in it. And it rocks. My kids sometimes have commented when using my computer that "hey your old thing is FASTER than my new laptop"??? I learned to keep it streamlined and secure.

Shield Up! is another website that has a ton of helpful advice.

no, I'm not blaming it on woman's world or other main companies. I know that there not the ones that do it. that would be pretty stupid if they did. we have the antispyware, adware, malware, norton and all of that stuff. my computer is set to scan everyday. I don't know which programs they all are. My hb takes care of all that. I'm just saying that your opening a lot more pages, so your opening yourself up to a lot more chances. I realize it can be even set to not happen right at the time you see it, that they can be set to happen weeks later or anytime. things still do get through no matter what you try to do to block it. I have all of these protection things and stuff still gets through. I just don't understand why people want to do this stuff. does it serve some kind of purpose to them or an advantage of something? What kind of people even want to waste their time coming up with this stuff? seems like they would have better things to do with their time. are people that bored with their lives? I always try to be cafefull of what I open, but it can be attached to anything, emails, sites, etc. I wish someone could come up with a way to send the viruses back to the people who send it, if you could do it legally. It would stop ,probably, pretty quickly.

I had the same problem with Woman's World virus. I have Microsoft Live One Care security on my system, and it will not even allow me to open the site. It states they are
trying to get access to my directory.
So as you can guess I say away from the site.

 I DO scan my computer every day - willadsene just convinced me to
stop entering Woman's World sweeps - there are enough contests out there
without having to worry about their site.
