AP - Charlton Heston, who won the 1959 best actor Oscar as the chariot-racing "Ben-Hur" and portrayed Moses, Michelangelo, El Cid and other heroic figures in movie epics of the '50s and '60s, has died. He was 84.

I liked Charlton Heston. Although I'm more liberal than not, I thought Heston was what a true conservative should be. He supported civil rights and social causes (he marched with and supported MLK), and he was a staunch defender of the 2nd Amendment (the right of the common citizen to keep and bear arms). A conservative with a heart...wow! What a concept! And, on top of all that, he was a great actor. He will be missed. RIP Mr. Heston!
