I never got to go on this trip. There were problems from the get go:

1) It took the sponsor a long time to contact me, I had to email the company running the sweeps and he finally got in touch;

2) The hotel they reserved for us was really bad, cheap ($100 for 2 nights, as oppose to $300 stated in the rules) and infested with bed bugs. I told them about the problem and sent reviews, but they insisted we keep the reservation. We ended up making our own reservation for a different hotel with our own money;

3) I couldn’t activate the gift card they mailed to me, because they never gave me the activation code and were totally lost on how to obtain it. I had to call a gift card company twice and then explain the sponsor what he was supposed to do, they had no clue and did nothing to find out - simply said that they didn’t know how to fix the problem. Finally they got it and I activated the card right before leaving for the airport;

4) The best for last: my husband was my guest and we have different last names. When asked for our info by the sponsor, I emailed them correct names and DOB. Of course they ended up making plane reservation with wrong last name for my husband. I noticed the mistake and let the sponsor know, I was told that they called the airline and everything is fixed, there is a note on a ticket and we will be fine.

When we got to the airport yesterday the airline didn’t let us check in because of my husband’s wrong last name and told us there is no note and we have to buy a new ticket for $400-$500. I called the sponsor, at first he didn’t answer, I left a message. After a while he called back, talked to me and said he would call me back later. We waited at the airport for another hour and when there was about 25 minutes left to the boarding time ( and it was the last flight to Orlando that day), we looked at the lines to the check in and security and they were both huge. We decided that there is absolutely no chance at all we would make it on time. I called the sponsor twice, he didn’t pick up and I left him a message that we are going home. He called me after few minutes and said that everything is fixed, but we were already on a shuttle to the parking to get our car, I told him about those lines again and said that we are on our way home.

My question is: What should I do now about all this? I will contact the company running the sweepstakes. What else? This is such a huge disappointment, we lost money on a hotel, parking at the airport, gas, I had to take day off from work, my husband took half day off. It’s just terrible.

What is your advice?

sorry you had such a terrible trip, or almost trip. What contest was this won in?? I really hope you win something else that you and hubby really want and it goes great for you.

Wow, How freaking Awful!! I would demand the amount that you lost from the company. I would also write a formal complaint about sponsor to the better business bureau. Jeez, I bet you both were just sick about this whole thing. You might have to end up contacting a lawyer and seeing what you could do legally. I'm just not sure what could be done. So sorry! I hope everything gets better for you and your husband. :sunny:

:crazytongue: Wow that hasd to be one of the worse outcomes on a trip win that I have ever heard of. So sorry for your disappointment. Would really love to know the name of the sweep and sponsor to make sure that I never enter any of them!

zonabogusia I try to look at events that frustrate/annoy/tick me off as learning curves so I'll be better prepared for the next crisis :crazytongue:

We just went a week without AC { we rent an upstairs apt. in Las Vegas (HOT!!! :cussing:) & have a new owner & property mgmt } and though I tried to anticipate and head off possible problems, still we suffered :cry:

I've learned that while people may say they understand, they really can't - and that when you have to rely on others, they will rarely put as much effort into helping you as they would if it was them being inconvenienced :cussing:

With that in mind, try to deal with them firmly but with respect - I would definitely try to find the top of their "chain of command" if possible to deal with!!!

GL :wave:

Thank you all! Tommorow (Monday) I will contact the company running the sweepstakes and will try to contact some kind of supervisor of the company that was preparing my trip (the sponsor), it was a different one. It's really frustrating, but I'm trying to stay positive. I will let you know of the outcome.

Document everything, especially the cash you spent in case they send you a 1099.

No point in paying taxes on a prize that wasn't fulfilled.

The ARV's are just approximations, so they normally only report what they paid for on the 1099. If they don't, just call them and they should make the adjustment.

Ive often wondered about trip wins and the inherent problems that come with them. Always seemed odd to me that accommodations like hotel stays and plane tickets would be booked by the sponsor rather than the person or peoples attending.Theres just going to be problems with that. We sweepers have to accept that inevitability.

I wish I had something more constructive to add as far as a course of action to take or some kind of advice. Keep that positive sweeper attitude: Sweep wins are like money, easy come easy go. Just know, this wont be the last prize you win and it wont be the only time its completely fubar.

I'm very sorry it didnt work out and I hope you have much smoother experiences in the future.

Ive often wondered about trip wins and the inherent problems that come with them. Always seemed odd to me that accommodations like hotel stays and plane tickets would be booked by the sponsor rather than the person or peoples attending.

We have won eight trips, and there were no problems with any of them; and the hotels were always top-notch.

There are many reasons why the sponsor usually needs to be the one to book the hotel and airfare, etc. They are the ones paying for it and need to be in control of the costs and spending. More times than not, a hotel and/or airline may be co-sponsoring the sweepstakes or may have arrangements with the sponsor for specials rates, discounts, public relations-related matters, etc. Plus, it is usually necessary for accounting when it comes to taxes and right-offs.

Only once did we win two round-trip airline tickets to Germany (ARV of $2,000), and the sponsor let us book the flights. We were adamant that we wanted to fly with Lufthansa; so, we paid for the tickets out of pocket, submitted the receipt to the sponsor, and they reimbursed us for the $1,200+ total the tickets cost.

Your experience in this case was truly a "Sweepers' Nightmare". Good luck with trying to get the sponsor to own up to its mistakes and allot you a worthwhile prize. :cussing:

Update:
the president of hearitfirst contacted me, he was very apologetic and nice. Pretty much we got to keep the credit on the plane tickets and they will pay for the penalty on each ticket we use. Also the sponsor (Inpop) will get us 2 tickets to a concert of our choice they organize in our area. So we only lost money on a hotel we had reserved and never got this part of our win. But I'm pretty glad we got to keep the plane tickets.

:cheers: So happy to hear that the sponsor was cooperative and understanding to the horror you were put thru. I always love a happy ending! :popcorn:

Sorry to hear about this horror story, makes me leary of winning a trip. LOL But am glad that the sponsor tried to make up for it. That is always a good thing.

Bummer. I've had two big trip wins, and both were booked by the sponsor company or their travel agent with no issues. Hopefully this sponsor won't use that travel agent again, and at least they tried to make it better!

OMG how awful!!! I've never won a big trip contest (though I enter them a lot) but this is the 2nd time I've heard someone experiencing something like this. So sorry to hear this happened to you.

Update: I was supposed to get a check for the penalty we have to pay to the airline to use the plane tickets ($300). The president of hearitfirst.com promised to mail it within 14 days. Up to date I have not received anything ( it has been almost 2 months). I emailed them twice and got no response. What should I do? This is beyond frustrating! :cussing:
