Why did they pick Texas in August? It seems like an insane choice.

I don't know, it will be HOT and muggy. There were probably lots of people from SA's sweeps club at the convention (just a guess).

They picked August because of the tourist season. If conventioners came in June or July then they would have had to pay a lot more for hotel rooms. The convention hotel has rooms for $125 a night and it is on Riverwalk just blocks from Amtrak and the Alamo.

Read the whole site as it is packed with information. You should register early as I tried last October for this year and they were booked for a month or more. This one will go fast as it is centrally locate in the heart of America.

I hope to finally meet Ken there. Last time I was at a convention I won a lot of prizes while there and took home lots of goodies.

When doing research and making reservations make sure you have the right hotel. Marriot San Antonio Riverwalk is near the Marriot San Antonio Rivercenter. It does lead to confusion.

Main site and convention schedule

They are 1/3 full and are at 326 with 13 months to go.

For those of you who can make the convention on August 27th should do so. From 1-4 pm will be the early registration. Registration is where you get a bunch of goodies, stuff you will need for drawings, instructions, etc. It can be quite crowded so by going to the early registraton you can help them out and avoid a crowd. That is in theory only.

It will be Thursday Night, until 5 PM Friday and Saturday, and 9 to noon Sunday. That will leave you some time for a quick trip to SeaWorld, River Walk, the Alamo, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, etc.

Raffles

They will not do postcards and envelopes this time. You put in a bunch of stamps, cash that will buy gift cards, cash, and/or lottery tickets while hoping to win up to a thousand dollars in stamps, cash, gift cards or lottery tickets. People at the convention will gladly give you money for your stamps and other snail mail stuff you win.

For shoppers there is the Rivercenter Mall and lots of other stores in the area.

If you have a special diet you will need to contact them ahead of time.

This is a general outline and varies from convention to convention.

There is a first day of registration and a meet and get to know each other party. Do not expect more than cheap snacks. This is when you find out the schedule, pick up your package and get to hit the vendor rooms.

Each day there is a vendor room where people set up a sales area. They have to pay for this. Usually it is only sweeps related. You might find newletters, online sites like SA, and lots of snail mail related items. Lots of information and stuff to buy. There are raffles and drawing you can buy tickets to.

Then there are two days of morning breakfast if you are lucky to get anything to eat. I usually only had jelly and fruit juice or coffee. That is the problem of being on such a strict diet. There is time to visit vendor rooms. Then you sit and listen to people talk about sweepstakes. Lots of things to learn at these lectures.

It depends on the finance and people behind a convention on what is done. Most of the time there are side trips to local events or attractions that you can purchase. One convention had trips to river boat gambling casinos, one had a bus to an Indian gambling hall, and one had a riverboat dinner cruise.

Last day is the big prizes and the farewell. Usually no lectures.

It depends on each convention on what they do.

:smt006 Thanks for posting this.

It is very interesting to me. I

am pretty sure I can't attend so if anyone gets to go, please give us a report!

It is in San Antonio so train fare would be a cheap way to get there from Los Angeles, Chicago or even New York City. Usually there are people asking for room sharing and rides.

The most important thing is to get the reservation in. You can always get a ride, car pool, share rooms etc. Four people could get two rooms and a share car for under $30 a day.

I went to the convention in June this year. 18th annual sweeps convention. This was my first one. OMG!! It was soooooo fun. I never would have thought it could be THAT DANG FUN. Me and my best friend went. I think going to these sweeps conventions gives one a chance to travel, meet people you would have never otherwise, and experience something outside of your element. On top of that, there are TONSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS of prizes given away at these conventions. I mean LOTSSSSSSS OF PRIZES. We were blown away. My buddy won a gold necklace, and I won $500 and an Ipod. I remember we sat by this one lady who won 4 times in a row in one night. She even won a new home computer system on top of the smaller prizes. Lots of vendors there selling the most unique sweepstakes items I have ever seen. From wacky envelopes to glitter glue pens. Man this thing was soooooo fun that my best friend and I decided that we are gonna go to every convention. No way would we miss this again. I think the registration fee is the only big part. Getting that big payment out. After that, it's all cake. I highly reccommend going if you got the cash.

Since I only live 3 hours away I am defintely going! too cool! warning about the mall on the riverwalk, it is touristy and very expensive.

The people visiting could use some help here. Vegan, glluten free, allergies and cheap but worthy places to eat and stay are hot topics. What are some places to visit if you only have one day or a couple of hours after the convention? I will eventually post on my site and hope we can help each other have a fun time with out spending a lot.
