Asked To Audition For The Sweepstakes TV Pilot

The show wasn't TOO bad.

I'm a big couponer, I have a stockpile in my cellar and LEGALLY use 100's of coupons a week. I have for almost 10 years now.

Since extreme couponing their has been coupon fraud, empty shelves, greedy people and angry cashiers - way more then ever before :(

The show on sweeping wasn't too bad, but it did make it seem like a "cult" with the one man who quit his job to sweep..

Watched the program. Like the person before me said, not too bad. I was glad to hear the one woman say that you have to pay taxes on the wins. Hope people watching the show caught that bit of info.

The man who sweeps 8-10 hrs a day is excessive but since he's made into a "job" then I guess he considers those his work hours. I know a few years ago when I was more diligent and entering everyday I did win more than I do now.

I saw the show today and felt it was about what I expected after having seen Extreme Couponing and Hoarders - they profiled somewhat compulsive sweepers, especially the last guy who focuses on mail-in sweeps: you could tell his wife was long-suffering. The fake oversized checks they held up at the beginning of each sweeper's story represented their cumulative win totals, which I am sure was based on ARV, not fair value. Still, even the woman who said she'd won $1.2 million had been entered over 50 years, so that averages out to $24,000 a year, but of course that wasn't just cash. The guy doing the 10-hour days as his sole source of income said he was making $80,000 in prize value, but there's no doubt the actual cash he's 'earning' is considerably less, since he's selling a lot of the items on the net for less than the ARV, and he's still keeping some prizes which means he's out the taxes on those. I also found it revealing when he had a sly grin after announcing he was entering a honeymoon sweeps for his soon-to-be-married daughter by entering HER info directly. Hmmmm. He SAID he was entering up to 1,000 sweeps a day but unless he's entering low-value sweeps I suspect he might be entering sweeps under his wife's and daughter's name all along. Just guessing, don't mean to impugn him.

Overall, it was interesting but there was NOTHING about the technical aspect of entering, where to go to find them and what to do except for a few generalities or obvious conclusions (i.e., 1-day contests on the weekend are easier to win). I have a LOT of technical tricks and shortcuts, and while I wouldn't mind comparing notes with them I doubt they're doing much of them - they're using sheer time to do them, I think (I'm a retired systems analyst). Did anyone else see the Jaguar the 10-hour guy had appraised at around $6,000 in attempting to sell it for his daughter's wedding? He said when new it was valued at $50,000, so I'm wondering why the heck he held onto it in the first place!

I too don't know how he could spend 8 hours a day. I enter alot, matter of fact I seem to be looking for MORE to enter and I'm still done in 1-2 hours. Maybe he dosen't use roboform?

I agree with KC. I watched it and the actual process of entering wasn't addressed in detail. Even so,I have family that will enter a sweep one time, be hopeful about winning and don't bother to enter it daily by the rules for a better chance. It takes a lot of time. My friend can play Xbox for hours, so to me, it's kinda the same thing. He's gaming and I'm winning stuff!

Plus, unlike the coupon thing, sweepstakes all come down to luck and odds so never a sure thing. I could never quit working to sweep but it has provided nice things I could never afford. It's fun and exciting and because it's so social I believe it could lead to opportunities or friendships.

Then there is SA! When I first found this place I hesitated, not sure I wanted to sign up but I was trying to bookmark all the contests I wanted to enter. Turns out it's the best way to organize, learn, get support and a wonderful group of nice people to share a hobby with! I love it so much I signed up for the Plus membership. SA makes it easy and fun!

Mostly the show had enthusiastic people and I agreed about the excitement of getting the mail each day! I think the sponsors would have loved the show because it showed the people buying tons of products at the grocery store for contests. I also agree that most sweepers try it but don't stick with it for very long. One of my first wins was huge and then I was hooked!

When does this show air? I've never even seen an advertisment for it.

I did see a show about people who are really big into couponing. It was interesting and I can see how anyone could do it. I used to be what I thought was 'big' on couponing but still only saved maybe 20% of my gorcery bill. I buy mostly fresh groceries and not big brand items.

I posted this in this thread:

What are we talking about? I can't find any discussions on this on SA, thanks.

edit - this it?

Holding my breath and jumpin in hoping not to be tarred and feathered....hehehehe. :fired: I came here because of the show. I spend alot of my evening time Ebaying...so I'm comfortable with online stuff. My husband and I were watching the show and he looked at me and said...."you're going to try this, aren't you..." He knows me so well....lol! :hiding:

So, the next day I went looking for a forum filled with Sweepers. This is how I learned how to Ebay...reading experienced posts on the Ebay Discussion boards and give it a try and 11 years later I am still Ebaying!

So, so far I purchased Roboform and signed up here. I have entered a ton of Sweeps already! Roboform and some of the Newbie, and Tips threads have been extremely helpful, thank you to all who took the time to help Newbies like me. I've found it fun and figured that the time I waste on Facebook,(which is kind of a waste of time, lol) will be put towards Sweeping.

So.....Hello! I'm Cheri, I'm a Mom and a Figure Skating Coach. My hobbies are Ebaying and my new hobby is Sweeping! :sunny:

We don't tar and feather in here ( as least not too much  ) Welcome to SA! It doesn't matter why you decided to try sweeping you are welcome! We are like a big family here ... great people, annoying people, young people, old people, funny people, sad people, little people, big people, braggerts, shy ones, and most of all a bunch of folks who love sweeping. Just don't get discouraged if you don't win right away, because you probably won't. It take patience, and consistancy to win. Keep in mind that when you enter a sweeps, before anyone can win, it has to end, then they have to draw the winners and finally they have to notify the winners. There are times when the winner isn't drawn for a week to a month after the sweeps ends (some draw right away), then it can be a week to a month until they notify the winner. Then it may be 6 - 8 weeks before the prize is received. You won't always get a notification of a win ... they just show up at your door, which is really great, who doesn't like suprises! At any rate don't get discouraged if you don't win right away because the wins will come ... Good luck!!!

Welcome, this is a great site. My advice is to do all your entering before you get sucked into reading the forums like me. Lots of sweeps and free samples on FB, I still waste my time on FB. Also, wasting my time playing the UNO game and Bingo on Candystand. Enter, enter enter and Good luck!

GO BLUE

I never got into ebay, but I did the same as you - I read the comments/forums to glean the particulars then I jumped in with both feet - that was 7 years ago and it's the best decision I ever made!!!

My learning curve was so steep, {I started out another site where they didn't think to help newbies much} so I put the info into those stickies you mentioned, and came up with the Sweepers Credo which is where you probably saw "enter and forget it" - words I live by!!! :headbang:

judge gave you the lowdown on SA, but if you have a question not covered in one of the stickies, or you just want to "talk" we are {almost!} always here!!! :sunny:

If you're ever going to win, this is the best place to do it. Not only is this a friendly sweeps site, but the admin here provides us with all the tools we need to make sweeping easier and more efficient. Since joining this site many years ago I have literally won thousands of great prizes! Just about anything you can think of is given away at some point.
Best of luck to you in your new hobby. Best of luck to yu! P.S. Your hubby will like your new hobby once the prizes he wants start showing up at the door. My hubby became very supportive when the big flat screen home entertainment center arrived several years ago. Now he just tells me "Enter, enter, enter"

I had just watched that show this week on TLC. wow I hope it doesnt mess up the sweeps. Would they have paid you to be on it and how did they even find you?

My opinion is that they're going to the extremes on this show, as they would for problem gamblers when most gamblers are sane. They had a sneak preview of one guy who spends 10 hours a day entering sweeps - I personally spend 2.5 hours or less per day, and I enter a LOT. The first segment I saw last Friday on 20/20 was underwhelming - no one actually said how they enter sweepstakes, or how long it took them to win stuff, so I think the series is going to romanticize the subject and draw people into it thinking it's "easy peasy", with unrealistic expectations, but those people are not going to cause companies offering sweepstakes to expand their offerings but instead they simply will reduce the odds for everyone else. And that's fine by me, I have no right to insist more people don't enter so that it benefits me, I'm simply saying it's a negative.

I agree with this completely. I used to sweep consistently back before the 'net with the mail-ins and then stopped. I recently started again and average 500-800+ entries each week in my spare time. Unfortunately, I use the computer all day at work and often feel no desire to use it at home, so it's a mental battle.

I do think though, that many people will jump on sweepstaking right out of the gate, expect to win right away with the 'one entry' and be done with it. When it doesn't happen, they'll stop. It is alot of consistency and patience, often with little payback. Attitude can be everything. In my first week of doing it again, I did win something, but that is not the case for everyone. It can be an underwhelming process for many I would imagine.

I am new to this site and def enjoy the forum atmosphere. I've been catergorizing/bookmarking my own sweeps and this format is helpful in addition/instead.
