Betty Crocker & Toys for Tots

:sunny: I just found this while looking for a recipe. Betty Crocker is donating 10 cents to Toys for Tots, (looks like they have a ways to go), for every cookie that you decorate and send to a friend online. It's really kind of fun, the kids will love it. Go to: www.bettycrockercookies.com have fun decorating your cookie ecards and help a good cause.

The problem I have when companies do something like this is that they are using a worthy cause as a means to drum up more PR/advertising for themselves. If they really want to help a cause and make a donation, they should do so quietly and humbly. They certainly don't need any of us to make a donation.

They aren't asking us for any donations. I'm sure Toys for Tots doesn't have a problem with them getting some PR/advertising out of their webpage. I like to think that when I do make a donation to a cause that even if it isn't $25,000 like this Betty Crocker donation, that my donation along with other similar donations do make a difference.

I know they're not asking us to donate; but, ethically, I don't agree with them using a projected donation as a means to drum up more PR for themselves. I just feel it's morally wrong. This is just not the area to be looking for more PR.

:sunny: Just as I have no problem with companies promoting themselves to sponsor a sweepstakes to give us prizes, (otherwise there would be no sweepstakes, prizes or SA) I have no problem with them promoting themselves to give to a worthy cause. This type of promo helps to draw attention to their cause and makes participants aware of them when deciding which charities they will be giving to this holiday season.

(in the news today) Nationally, one of the biggest declines in donations is at Toys for Tots, a nationwide charity run by the U.S. Marine Corps and the Marine Corps Reserves. Donations at many locations across the country are down, at least partly in response to toy recalls in the past year.

Re: Betty Crocker & Toys for Tots

I think the reason for that is because of the growing popularity of the "Angel Tree" and other local programs/services. It still ends up evening out in the end; but I think people (like ourselves who used to give to Toys for Tots) are now choosing to do an "Angel Tree" child, because it's helping a child locally. You also have more control over what you give to that child according to what "needs" are listed on the card which I really like. I can choose to give something more, meet all of their needs, and choose the quality of those items. Toys for Tots is by no means hurting for publicity. People now are just looking to their own backyard to help those in need. So, even if donations for such causes are decreasing, you'll find an increase in local donations. In the end, it evens out if not more so. Plus, going this route, also cuts down on administration costs to nothing or next to nothing which is another reason more and more people are going this route. I long ago stopped giving to United Way when I found out how much of donations were being directed to administration costs. :eat:
