I have a question? I need your honest opinions here. Please....

What do you think about silk flowers for center pieces? For a wedding? I took some pictures here and since I don't have $20-30K to spend I was thinking of making my own using silk flowers .. Ya know... A diy project....

I think silk flowers would be beautiful! I didn't have a huge, regal wedding so anything pretty and elegant such as that sounds wonderful!

I was debating that also. Not because I think it is cheap at all, but because we're cheap...hubby and I LOL We didn't even have silk flowers let alone real flowers.

I think depending on what flowers you incorporate, Champ, it has very good potential to be absolutely lovely. And with all of the real flowers you will have it will not "cheapen" your wedding by any means. Besides, silk flowers look so much like the real deal. I bet no one would even notice. And if they do, who cares. Silk flowers are just as beautiful.

Keep in mind you're talking to a girl who knows only so much about "girly" things, but I believe they will be beautiful regardless.

:headbang: I think the silk flowers can be beautiful! Just make sure that the centerpieces aren't so tall and big that people can't talk across the table and your beautiful arrangement ends up sitting off to the side............or even worse, on the floor!!! good luck with your plans! I don't think they look cheap at all!

:sunny: There certainly is nothing wrong with silk flowers. I don't particularly like the centerpiece in the pic though. I have seen many centerpieces made with silk that I had to touch just because I couldn't believe they weren't real. Make a couple of different ones and we can tell you what we think.

I really like silk flowers just for the simple fact that you can keep them afterwards to remind you of your special day...

You are still doing a beach theme right? I would look for something maybe more mute, but I've told you before I'm into natural looking things. I want you to be what stands out at the wedding girl!

All the weddings I have been to have always had a center piece that someone could take home. In other words, it's not going to die or be too big. Silk flowers or a live potted plant are a very common as part of a centerpiece. Someone at each table always takes the centerpiece home; either by default, because no one else on the table wants it, or by a table raffle. Never go with anything too tall or too large. It can be an obstruction on the table and hard to carry home. We had two from one wedding one time. The centerpiece became an annoyance when trying to talk to people across the table, and I ended up not being able to find a place to put them. After they just sat there for too long, we threw them out.

thanks for the advice darkside... what about a 16" eifiel tower vase? is that a fair height?

I'd probably go no taller than 16 inches tall for the actual whole centerpiece; 12 inches would probably be even better. Remember, you can always go out instead of up. I had those two centerpieces between my legs all the way home, so they didn't fall over and break. They were very nice, but they really didn't belong on the table. People were putting them on the floor so they could talk to each other.

Actually, I think these are pretty cool and fun. The centerpiece is actually made up of party favors. So, everyone at the table can have a piece of the centerpiece.

thanks girl..... those are cute.... so you think 16" for the whole thing.... ok... i'll try a few more combinations .... i'm gonna go take a shower, go fishin', and take some bridal magazines with me to the lake and see what else i can come up with...talk to you guys soon...

Thanks again

Just remember one thing, it's YOUR wedding. When deciding on anything, it should be something that you like. You shouldn't worry what other people think. You can't please everyone. There will always be some who don't like something about a wedding, and there's nothing you can do about that.

Another way to help you plan, is think back over other weddings that you went to and what you didn't like about them.

We usually end up not liking the food!LOL

With the exception of a couple that had out a good buffet, we ended up stopping to get something to eat after all the other weddings, because we didn't really like the food or it wasn't much and we were real hungry.

For my taste it has too much for such a tall narrow vase. It looks top heavy. I would just use the orchids, the little yellow flowers and the bamboo sticks. But then I like simpler things.
