Wow I won my first essay contest! I am excited. What a nice prize. The $250 GC to the hotel might seem like a lot, but I think the cheapest room is $385.00 per night. Never mind I will call the hotel and find out the cheapest day I can stay and book a room. It will be a fantastic one day get away for my husband and myself! I am excited.

Who Inspires You?
Life was not easy for my mother. She was a survivor of the Japanese concentration camps in Indonesia and was then exiled to the Netherlands after the war. After about five years, Mom decided she could provide a better life for her offspring in America. With great sacrifice, Oma (Dutch for Grandmother) braved the move across the ocean and to the Promised Land. Although the transition was hard and required much work, America did not fail. Oma and Opa were able to provide the love, security and warmth they craved for her children. However, what inspired and strengthened me the most was my mothers determination to always stand up for the underdog. With her horrifying wartime experience, and at a slim five foot four, you would have thought her to shy away from controversy. Quite the contrary, Oma was forever the first one to help out a person in need. Although my mother died in 1999, I can still hear her favorite saying, Do not let them throw rocks at your neighbor; or the next day your house will leveled by a storm of rocks. It has become the mantra of my life.
